Thanks to Jim Burton for the memories, gen and more!

The WTT for May 1974 shows 1C96 as being booked a 24/26 and a departure time from Edinburgh of 2145, what a train albeit a long fester at Carstairs for the next loco move
During my first years living at West Calder, I was employed by British Railways (Scottish Region) at Buchanan House in Cowcaddens, thus I was but rarely in Edinburgh at the back of 2100! Similarly, after I left the railway service whist at Moray House College of Education and during my first years of teaching at Bathgate Academy, I had few opportunities to question whether there were viable alternatives to a DMU from Edinburgh home!!

Table 225 never featured in many of our hurried bible consultations but heres 1C96 as per the May 77 timetable leaving Edinburgh at 2140
By 1976, I was under less pressure and one night decided to try a novel move – Platforms 10/11 (old style) at Waverley contained, at the back of 2100 SX, a motley collection of BGs, GUVs and assorted other parcels vehicle + I BCK – this forming 1C96 2140 SX Waverley-Carstairs. The move was 1C96 to Midcalder and, after a 25 minute fester, the unit down the bank to West Calder. This was the start of 92 runs to Midcalder from either Waverley or Haymarket. I was generally the only passenger at least till the date was announced when 1C96 would cease to carry passengers!!). The fester at Midcalder (OK Kirknewton if you insist!!) was enlivened by discussions with Bobby, the general factotum whose shift technically ended with the departure of 1C96 but who seemed only too willing to discuss not only railways, but also the state of the world with me.
I feel that the route from Edinburgh to Midcalder is worth a mention forming, as it does the first stage in the climb to Scotland’s forgotten summit, Cobbinshaw. After leaving Platform 4 at Haymarket and rounding the relatively recent Duff Street curve,
Slateford Junction marks the point where the original Caledonian route from Edinburgh Princes Street would have joined. From Slateford station the gradient is 1 in 102 to Kingsknowe, 1 in 143 to just past Curriehill, then 1 in 134 to just past Ravelrig Junction then easier to the Midcalder stop. It certainly made for a lot of noise from a Type 2!!
Just what the booked loco for 1C96 was I never completely worked out – the majority of my runs were behind Class 25s from either HA or ED but as will be seen from the following, there were other possibilities!! On final point – distance Haymarket-Midcalder approx 9.72 miles.

on 19/10/76, 22/10/76 and 03/11/76, due to reksignalling between Waverley and Haymarket, 1C96 was retimed to depart at 2128 and diverted round the “Sub”.,

From 20/05/77, the schedule Haymarket to Midcalder was increased to 19 minutes.
The was a corresponding increase in the timing load from D260 to D600(!!).
Perhaps fortunately 1C96 never remotely approached this weight!!
