The first of 5 days of a shared All Line Rover began after work with some “roarer” mileage on the Evening Cobblers. High winds the night before had damaged several sections of the ole with Hanslope – Northampton suffering a severe wires down. To quote signal engineer Andy Bald, “Hanslope the coldest place on earth!” . The Cobblers were all diverted to Rugby but unfortunately the 3 Cobblers that night were all “cans”.
“Can” bowl outs were to continue later that night at Rugby with 86213 on 1S06 2110 Euston – Stranraer, normally a solid roarer turn. Still after a 310 to New St 81019 was joined on S19 for the mileage move North.

The usual morning “tip top” moves then down to Carlisle for the usual Northbound roarer procession. 81021 produced but crossed, to howls of anguish the rare 85017 on the 1305 Glasgow – Euston. Fife late afternoon “tip top” moves saw us cross with immense noise 20219 dragging a broken tram which had failed at Ladybank. This remains the only time i have ever seen a 20 dragging a tram albeit just crossing it!

V62 saw much derision around 1am when 86204 sung its way into lovely Carstairs with the Glasgow portion so a Carlisle bail saw a much more rateable 85028 on M16 all the way to Euston on a quiet open coach. A day on the Pompey – Bristols followed, as always great fun them 33’s on load 5 Mk I’s. S06 the Stranny got the expected roarer in 85006 to howl North

AC power was obviously short as 85006 after arriving off S06 was put straight onto the South end of the engine line to work 1M14 straight back, mileage! Unfortunately 85006 failed prior to departure so we had 47635 to Preston where we bailed for 85004 forward on 1M15. Pre Easter reliefs and the ongoing AC power shortage meant daytime roarer moves aplenty clearing 85004 for a thousand near Wigan a highlight.

85005 took us North to Carstairs for a brief Fife “tip top” move before as hoped for the 0925 Glasgow – Birmingham relief was roaring and with the rareish 85009 up front. This relief took the unusual route via Bellshill and the bottom of Mossend Yard en route to Motherwell. Later i joined 85004 on 1M30 Ayr – Euston but bailed at Preston for 85021 on another Glasgow – Euston relief. However 85004 became gapped/failed on a neutral near Lichfield and 85021 with much snorting and roaring pushed 85004 plus train including her own relief 5 miles or so to milepost 116 where, from memory 85004 roared off in fine style!. Happy days on the WCML!
