319457 and 214 RA Euston – Berko, November 18th 2022
The 1927 Euston – M.Keynes 319 turn is often late. This is because the units have worked the 1624 Euston – Northampton and 1805 Northampton – Euston already with a booked turnround of just 9 minutes at Euston, something nigh improbable on todays WCML.
There is another problem in that the 1933 Euston – M.Keynes stops all shacks, clogging up the slow line for a delayed 1927. Sometimes the 1927 is given the fast line Euston – Watford South but on November 18th with a heavier late running the booked Watford and Hemel stops were removed.
So a pretty empty 1927 left Euston with a steady, possibly checked run Camden – Willesden from where the motors went into scream mode. A loud blast on the horn as we screamed through Watford non stop! making up a few minutes on the booked times. Unfortunately this was never an epic run, worsened by catching up the dreaded 1933 all shacks at Ledburn.
Still its not every day you scream non stop through Watford on a 319 and these units can still go if given a longish non stop run and dry rail perhaps?. There are not expected to survive locally long into 2023 so commute home on the 1927 ex Euston for some classic BRE York built motive power while ye still can!
