37016 on load 16, Sep 78

Jim’s star performer 37016 survives in traffic today as 37706 seen here at Crewe on July 21st 2018

Thanks to Jim Burton for this epic class 37 performance!

“So to Saturday September 02, 1978 – it had already produced, and how, by the time I found myself at Berwick!  Having come in on the unit from West Calder, the first retirement was a return to Haymarket!!!  Why?? Well the 0915 Edinburgh portion 1C86 0915 New Street was powered by the esoteric (not to mention, massive!!) combination of 40199 (HM)/47310 (KY) both required!! Having returned to Waverley behind 40148 (HA) on 1G30, the next surprise was the power for 1V93 0940 Waverley-Plymouth – 45065 (TO)….so to Berwick

Shortly after 1045 a huge assemblage crossed the Royal Border Bridge – matters were not helped by a station announcement that the train approaching “was not for public use”. As it drew up it was noticed that coaches 11-16 had on them paper suckers labelled “Edinburgh”. SO……..”

The noise from Berwick to Burnmouth was unbelievable, even from the 11th coach. The gravity assisted (!) descent from Penmanshiel helped a bit!  All in all, a brilliant effort – wonder if a Class 37 was ever loaded again like this??
