The Tuesday dawned and 1L05 (the 0555) produced required 31163 – booked for a Yk Class 31 at the time – on load 8. The Yk-Ncle stage provided 40151, not required but none the less highly acceptable. So things seemed to be going according to plan, but then they became more interesting!! 1S16 – 0800 KX-Wav was announced 50 late -it staggered in 53 down with 55022, on one engine (and that sounded ropey!), being assisted by 31119!!! 55022 was duly failed and after some while 47460 appeared and departed 58.5 minutes late. Next 1S17, 1000 KX-Wav was reported 40 late. It duly arrived 44 down behind 55004, yes you’ve guessed it, on one engine. The Deltic was, again, declared a failure and left for Gateshead. The minutes had ticked by, about 12 of them, when off the High Level Bridge appeared a Class 40!!! 40152 duly coupled up to a load of 11!!! We left 60 late and the log gives details of what transpired…….

WEAVE TO

124.46. Waverley 125.5. 146 49 –
And so, we rolled in 81.75 late – despite having never stopped trying with 2000 hp on “Deltic” booking!! A block failure could be put down to bad luck – 2 of then looked like carelessness!!
The mass recovery time to compensate for delays due to background work prior to electrification,
As you will know from logs on the WCML during the early 1960.s – sometimes this was necessary!!.
This, to the best of my knowledge was the last time when a Class 40 appeared on the “Flying Scotsman”.
Thanks to Jim Burton for the classic log of 40152
