Much West Midlands power variety, Saturday July 2nd 1983
Crewe station buffet around midnight was strangely quiet with very few of the familiar faces enduring the rancid Crewe overnight on the “Mid”. A good few including the legendary Buzzard (aka Smudger Smith) of Cornish fame had done 50009 on the 2225 Manchester – Penzance from Piccadilly! A rare 50 working indeed, 50009 had reached Manchester on the FO Truro – Manchester there being no forwarding electric available at New St that Friday.
56051 passed Crewe on MGR’s around 0030 and we were soon aboard the up Splitter to Stafford. This never produced any decent traction but helped cut down the dreaded Crewe overnight fester. 86249 took us South to Stafford on the 0015 Liverpool – Euston portion to Stafford where a few of us camped out in the warm waiting rooms at the North end of the island platforms. There was plenty passing traffic but half asleep i kept no logs of the freight rush that Stafford produced. 86234 returned us to Crewe where we flagged off 85019 (dud) on V58 for a newie in 86002 on 1V60. By 1983 the 86’0’s were rare on daytime passenger work due their 80mph restriction, but they were fairly regular night birds.
Around 8am we were at Derby fresh off the DMU from New St, a disappointing dud boilered 31279 worked 1E83 Chesterfield – Yarmouth which we all did to Long Eaton for the tram to
Loughborough for 15 miles of class 20 haulage with new 20172 and 20178 providing the power on 1E86 Leicester – Skegness.

20172 and 20178 at Notts with 1E83 0838 Leicester – Skegness on Saturday July 2nd 1983
Unusually 1E33 Luton – Scarborough arrived with a boilered Western based 47131 instead of the more usual 45, the forwarding loco from Notts was 47345 another newie!

47345 at Derby with 1E33 0726 Luton – Scarborough

Loco moves to and from Etches Park always kept festers at Derby interesting, heres 45037 dragging 20188 and 20173 onto the stabling point
The late morning Inter Regional flows from Bradford and York to the South often produced big Eastern 47’3s but not today with 45069, 47568 and a dull, very dud 47138 which i had to do on 1V79 0817 York – Tenby to cover the 12 o’ clock “rats”.
As quoted these were 25316 and 25305 which had both been on the “Aber’s” on June 4th so these were flagged too!

47138 kicks out the clag as she powers out of New St with 1V79 York – Tenby

No air con today then! 47078 at Bir Int’l with 1O23 1520 Liverpool – Poole

47320 is looped with a Soton bound liner as 47559 heads North past the once extensive Banbury yard (now a housing estate)
The day then fell apart really with just a few “nb” 47’s raked in ( 47061, 47250, 47294) on the Banbury – Leamington axis before 87004 and 310049/080 got me home.
Guy Kendrick was also out on the bash on a “Mid” on that July Saturday
God-awful early start after a night on someone elses bedroom floor saw us bleary eyed into Hagley Station;

You might gather here I like Crompton thrash, I do, and that addiction got worse during 1985. Am I also a bit sad that I really enjoy the sound of a Ped being mercilessly nailed? Even better, .two Peds! Its all about the thrash kids.
