The rancid 0524 unit off Leighton deposited me at Northampton with time to walk up to the overbridge and view the 4 morning “Cobblers” waiting their slots. I was shocked to see a “roarer” on one Cobbler rake, so it was a swift walk back albeit via the “Super Sausage”.
85028 produced on the second “Cobbler”, front coach seats bagged with silent, miserable commuters for company.
We crossed at least 2 “roarers” on down services as we headed South, things were looking good! A long fester followed but when 85032 reversed the stock of the 1035 Euston – Stranraer in, I was overjoyed. This train was normally an 86’4, not a regular “roarer” turn and a good few miles beckoned.
85032 roared North in fine style on a train that never got too wedged, at Carlisle i had a back up move of 85038 allocated on the 1425 Glasgow – Euston. Back up wasnt needed as 85032 soon returned South on the 1105 Stranraer – Euston forward from Carlisle, serious mileage!
At Euston 85015 was hovering and backed onto the 2010 Wolves so the rare un was sampled to Coventry,
85036 arrived here with the 1705 ex Holyhead, but a slightly disappointing 86438 returned me South from Coventry to the Keynes.
Yes a top day for “roarers” but the writing was on the wall. 4 days later 90003 worked the inaugural service train for the class and as the Summer progressed, them shiny new 90’s pushed out many of our beloved “roarer” class one turns…
