Some more “bashing on a budget”. The 1982 Winter timetable had seen a lot of 31/4’s transferred in to the Birmingham – Norwich route, but it was still possible to find some steam heat on the Liverpool St. – Cambridge – Kings Lynn route. Loco’s in “bold” are winners.

A big surprise on 12.02.1983, was 37038 on the front of the 09.03 to Birmingham. Unfortunately the lack of funds prevented any thoughts of staying on past Peterborough assuming 37038 was not ripped at Peterborough. Thanks to the “Rail Gen Archive”, we now know that 37038 was removed at Leicester, presumably the driver not knowing 37’s. Boilered 25058 worked forward, failing at Nuneaton and 25136 dragged through to Birmingham . 31321 worked the return to Leicester for 37038 forward to Cambridge.

A couple of times the move nearly started by heading south rather than north. The 07.43 Kings Lynn – Liverpool St. was due off Cambridge around 08.45. I remember a “union meeting” on 19.02.1983 when required 37092 was on the 07.43. We stuck with the 09.03, and picked up 37092 on the last move that day.

Tuesday 31.05.1983
On 31.05.1983 we had the curious case of the disappearing “37”. With some rich pickings to be had, myself and Trevor were sat at Cambridge behind 47294 on the 16.15 to “the Street”, when we saw Thornaby’s 37015 roll in with the 14.35 Liverpool St. – Kings Lynn. “Nice, we will have that later” was the general opinion. Fast forward a couple of hours and we are stood at Ely watching this split box 37 arrive on the 17.33 from Kings Lynn. Rather confused to see 37088. That was the day we learnt that sometimes what went into Kings Lynn, sometimes disappeared off on a freight!
