All on an “Area C”, April 30th – May 4th 1987
Classic “Crompton” moves from the late Tony Ewer who also took the phots.
With an Area C rover in hand (valid Bas – Salisbury – Yeovil Jn – Warminster – Pompey and Bomo) 2 days mainly sampling “Crompton” haulage on the Pompey – Bristols. You had a choice of overnight moves too but not great doss potential. We probably all remember Fareham bails where the “plus 3” between Pompey and Bristol bound services was nearly always made, as was the tight Southampton leap. Loads of thrash, mileage of sorts, loads of different locos, plus scenic delights from the wilds of Salisbury Plain to the Southampton Friday night girls, and much more…I only wish I’d done more Area C’s as they were always good fun…all for £12!!

Thanks to “TC” for digging out Driver Phil’s Area C route map from 1982, the useful extension to Warminster and to Yeovil Jn came in 1984

Tony’s Area C got off to a good start with the rare 33206 working the 1410 Waterloo- Salisbury. From memory a basher who needed 206 to clear the class went to Woking for the return run, unfortunately 206 failed on arrival at Woking!
