I was asked if I could share my moves of August 1985 to follow up those previously supplied by my fellow Bedfordians which for me was not that simple as the moves are still on their original bits of paper and I only noted the relief / extra trains at the time. This has meant me flicking through the 1985 bible and loco hauled travel to look up the service trains I did to make this more comprehensive. It is just as well I noted the approximate departure and arrival times of each move whilst on the bash as it has really made my life easier in determining the services I travelled on 29 years later!
In 1985 I often met Bricker after we had finished work on Fridays to do the 1720 from Bedford before we went our separate ways either at Leicester or Birmingham and this usually meant I didn’t speak to him again until the following Friday for the start of another weekend. In those days rumours and word of mouth was our only way of getting the gen unless someone had a TOPS sheet.

The usual problem at this time of year for me when the footie season started and it was common for me to go to the opening day of the season. As I didn’t require 31271, I didn’t bail off the tram at Loughborough so headed off home to catch up on some much needed sleep which was not the right move as it turned out. The 31 was sick over the ballast at Netherfield and double score bombs 20005 + 20055 dragged the failure to Leicester and dumped 31271 on the depot. As the Skeg missed the Harwich to Wolves service the 20’s returned to the stock and continued in service to Birmingham NS so additional mileage missed too!
