Bank Holiday Reliefs, August 24th-28th 1984

Friday

A Bank holiday weekend with a “Mid” and weighty supplement in hand, plus lots of expectation as I joined 87014 at the Keynes on a busy Euston-Liverpool. A New St avoidance move to Derby saw skinhead 31105, 31212 and 31416 all raked in on Brum-Norwich’s before the tram North on a grey sticky morning.

The first table 51 relief covered saw 37275 spare from it’s more regular coal duties due to the Miner’s Strike taken from Derby to New St on a York-Swansea Relief. At New St the unique all blue, non multi wired and central bodyside arrowed 86324 arrived on a Edinburgh-Plymouth Relief making her usual good visual impression of a “Roarer”.

Later in the afternoon vast bashing crowds hovered for the 1545 Derby-Plymouth and were rewarded with HM vacuum braked monster 37083 as power. At Cheltenham the “Mid” crowds got off and the Bristol crowds got on. We got old C.Wales headlight beast 37177 back from Cheltenham with a pathetic load 5 for her to haul up the Lickey. The overnights were expected to be a total wedge so I headed home on the dullest power of the day in 86217.

The late Tony Ewer catches a bit of flailing up front as 37295 arrives at Derby with the 1255 York – Bristol Relief on August 24th 1984

Phot spot…37083 1545 Derby-Plymouth Relief at Cheltenham with attendant crowds so typical of 1984 rarer workings.

Saturday

A late start with the 0646 off Leighton. The rare 86001 was on standby duties at Bletchley having worked the “milk empties” earlier. This was the 0350 Euston-Bletchley staff train with a van and BSK consist and could usually be used by normal passengers.

At Coventry the 0550 Padd-Liverpool got 86216 forward  rather than the more normal roarer but at least 85032 obliged on the 0910 Birmingham-Blackpool for a “bus stop” move to Wolverhampton. Here 25230/037 were chattering away to themselves on the far left line prior to them taking the 0735 Euston-Aberystwyth forward. The usual 10 or so bashers joined the train here and we were held outside Shrewsbury for 25211 to pass on the Crewe-Cardiff.  At Shrewsbury it was the usual dash to buy our Shrewsbury-Welshpool Day returns (£1.25 half) during the usually protracted loco run round.

We left the rats at Welshpool with a wander into this pleasant town to kill the 50 minute fester. The canal, butcher and pub was our entertainment today. As always the 1010 Aberystwyth-Euston was 20 late and when 25288/268 arrived the train was wedged solid as it always was. From Shrewsbury on a quieter train it was solid  thrash on the long climb out of Wellington. A bonus saw  85007 forward. The 1250 Bristol-Glasgow relief was just made at New St with it’s booked through diesel to Wolverhampton with 31170/301 up front for 81021 forward from Wolverhampton.  It was then a long wait at New St for a “newie” on the afternoon “procession” of holiday trains from the SW.

Eventually, newly converted 31444 produced on the Pompey-York up to Derby for a tram straight back. 81007 to Wolves on the Paignton-Liverpool  which made another regular relief, the 1930 Liverpool-Euston. This train ran on most Summer Saturdays catering for the crowds from the Liverpool Garden Festival. The ”Flower Power” today was 86325 and the usual Mk 1’s were unusually well filled. Farces Up North saw several Oxford bound passengers missing their last train from Brum so the train made an additional stop at Bletchley. I too leapt here hoping for a rare DMU special over the flyover to Oxford  but the Bletchley supervisor simply called a cab whilst I joined a 310 home

Sunday

Bad news from Trogg on the first 310 of the day. The Sunday Milk empties which ran on Sundays as the 0250 Euston-Bletchley Paper and Staff train and had this morning got a big pair in 25201 and 25239. The Northbound “Flower Power”, the 0700 Euston-Liverpool Relief was joined at the Keynes with 86323 adding to the morning yawns.

The “ice cream van” in celebrity rat 25322 “Tamworth Castle” at Milton Keynes on August 26th 1984

From Wolverhampton it was quality power in 40143 on the Manchester-Bristol. A Sandwell bail allowed a Crewe morning move. The early afternoon saw quality duffs with IM’s 47222 on the Manchester-Gatwick along with 47358 as lines in the book.

A huge crowd of bashers invaded Burton in the late afternoon with a mass bail off 37197 on the W.S Mare-Leeds to return South on 46052. 87006 ended a classic day of varied traction.

BH Monday

At 0508 precisely the “Milk Empties” rounded the corner. The “STN” was showing this as diesel hauled so I was looking forward to some local rat mileage. Mutterings of disgust when 31149 appeared on the train. A 310 forward from Bletchley then from New St as booked, 40104 was joined on the regular 0925 Birmingham-Llandudno Relief. With gen obtained from “Smudger Smith” the move was the “bucket” to  Crewe for a 120 DMU to Stoke for the rare 85010 back to Birmingham.

From here a short burst on 81007 then goyles 31297 out to a grey gloomy Nuneaton for 31167 back. Returning South, 310082 expired at Bletchley but a replacement 310 was quickly summoned from the Yard.

Tuesday

Another day for Table 51 relief’s. 37206 was a superb start on the 0907 Bristol-York relief, whilst 47249/291/324/340 also were also raked in. Waiting at Derby for the rare 45068 on the 1420 York-Plymouth Relief, one the younger members in our group decided he wasn’t now  into peaks and opted for 31440 to New St instead!.

Some of less youthful bashers waiting for the big peak at New St were gutted as 45068 was removed for 45113 forward. 86250 ended the Bank Holiday Mid to end a hell-fire weekend.
