Thanks to the late Tony Ewer for this contribution to our long now out of print “Bashing Years – Tales from 1984 booklet.
24th August 1984 (Fri)
Targets ; Lots of NEW loco’s, especially any non boilered (incl 86’0’s) or small engines (20’s or 25’s).
Top Trains ; Additional trains, York being a very good origination point. But keep an eye in the Nuneaton direction.
Gen : Word of mouth from TOPS extracts, Smudger’s extensive free gen sheets or pure luck, mobile phones were still in the distant future realm of Star Trek.
Highlight of the Day ; 37275 and 37295 both arrived with enough flailing arms to almost take off! Health and Safety, eat your heart out!
Disappointment of the Day ; the failure being rescued by an 86 – I’dhoped for something a little more exotic.

25th August 1984 (Sat)
47375 was a good score, as were the 31s. Although 9 scores, Summer Saturdays could often produce much more. Perhaps the rather odd overnight with substantial festers at Derby and Wolverhampton dulled the brain a bit, or maybe there was not much else out.

26th August 1984 (Sun)
Today’s feature was a private track bash for 47532 due a reported broken rail between Coventry and Leamington. It was decided it would be quicker to run round and start again. The second appearance at BNS being non stop being quite a rarity. As far as i can remember the following train managed to get through OK, and followed us into Leamington. It was all worth it as 47222 was a very big score.

27th August 1984 (BH Mon)
Bank Holidays often seemed to be a bit of a disappointment. With the reduced services and not as many additionals on the day there was a certain amount of scratching around waiting for something to happen – as can be seen by the lack of interesting engines scored. The 40 being an exception with a chase down to Chester to get it in the book properly, as the only previous experience was a cab ride, shunting at south end of Crewe station in the middle of the night.

28 August 1984 (Tue)
This extra day’s holiday from work proved worthwhile with five scored and all in the good category, except 45068 which was often quoted as being very rare on passenger services. There were quite a few disappointed customers when she was removed from the York – Plymouth Relief at Birmingham New St.
