Spot the celebrity! 27024 and 26014 awaiting departure from Bridge of Dun with the 1200 to Brechin on August 2nd 2024
Leaping off the throaty preserved Northern Scottish Leopard NPE 102B at Bridge of Dun early on the Friday the unmistakable sound of a class 27 ticking over “tip, top, tip, top, tip, top” style could be heard in the clear still Angus air.
Over the 3 days I enjoyed 18 round trips on this 4 mile branch line with a little gronk and pair mileage bringing it up to just over 170 miles, not bad!. With a respectable 5 Mk I’s in tow the thrash from 26014 and 27024 was excellent particularly on the steeply graded Bridge of Dun – Brechin direction. 26’s and 27’s always seem louder in Scotland, it’s just not the same behind a 26/27 at the Glos-Warks or wherever South of the border. A good crowd of bashers made the long haul North and most seemed happy with the Gala, yes “Mavis” and the “Ted” (marooned in Derbyshire) were advertised, but didnt produce but the substitute 08 and 20 performed superbly.
The best thrash of the 3 days for me came on the last Bridge of Dun – Brechin turn on the Sunday, 20166 was worked hard pulling load 5 and 2 idling small Sulzers on the back up the hill, the thrash was superb. A photographer recording the event in a field near Brechin was open mouthed at the passing spectacle, what noise.
The volunteers, always there to enjoy themselves, deserve our thanks for such a superb event, from celebrity basher drivers to the sociable Mk II buffet Bert what a great bunch! Here’s to us all enjoying next years event too, highly recommended.

Just prior to departure with the last train of the Gala, 27050 was split from the pair to quickly deal with a lineside fire East of Brechin. The total delay was just 20 minutes, thebus connection was held. I wander what Network Rail would have done…….
