An excellent start to the trip with 87101 producing on the then air cond MK IIe stock of the Northampton Cobbler. Meeting up with Tony Ewer (RIP) at the Street, the Usual boilered 37’s on the Cambridge circuit, 37118 then xb of SF was sampled for the fourth time!, this was to become a rare un when she left SF. March based 37103 and 37110 were my winners.
Spotting at London Bridge, then the Commuters were joined with 33035 and 33058 sampled with reasonable mileage, a bus stop move Oxted – Hurst Green on 33051. A quick 50 bash to Woking and back (we were hoping for Cromptons!)
We were at Padd soon after which around midnight with much mail and parcels being loaded, there were van trains everywhere. We joined the Milford Haven overnight a good hour before departure , and were soon well asleep helped by the therms from 47445 up front. Tony’s trusted alarm clock woke us around 0430 in the Neath area and were soon walking down a deserted Swansea High St towards the East Dock. Here the usual 5 37’s and 6 gronks were stable in the half light, a traction inspector checking the locos were secure exchanged a few words despite the early hour and deserted location.
More walking took us to Landore, the Foreman asking us to leave our bags in his office so “he knew when were done” , 26 locos on depot including Eastern 47’s 255 and 519. With Wales at home to Scotland in the Rugby we joined the 0920 ex Swansea additional leaping off at Neath and Port Talbot to get the power in. A suprise on leaping off the tram at Newport, a steaming 31279 was running round a short rake of Mk I’s which on realising was a Gloucester local we joined enjoying the big ped as far as Severn Tunnel Jn. Loads of power stabled here including 40090. 31422 returned us to Newport, for loco hauled trains all the way back to Padd. Passing Swindon Works catching final glimpses of doomed 25/40/46’s was the only lowpoint of a very enjoyable couple of days, and yes Scotland won the Rugby too!
