A good start to the day with narrow marklites on approach at Leighton (wide marklites meant it was a “can”) and 85031 was joined on the first Cobbler of the day for a good non stop run to Euston. With plenty time to spare i hung around Euston to view 85028 and 85037 arrive on later “Cobblers”. Looked good for tonights Evening Cobblers i mused as rateable A stock tube stock whisked me from Euston Square to Liverpool St along with what seemed like thousands of commuters.
With a cheap day to Cambridge purchased at Liverpool St it was a fair fester for the 1035 Liverpool St – Kings Lynn. This train had to be covered as it was still booked through diesel rather than a “can” to Cambridge. Although the days of 31’s or 37’s on these superb trains had long gone i wasn’t complaining when SF beast 47581 backed on.
A good run to Cambridge with just an Audley End stop, we arrived into Cambridge 3 minutes earlier.

As can be seen from the phots below there was plenty of action to view at Cambridge that day with an NSE 08, 37893, 47598 and 86260 producing along with lines of recently delivered 321 units awaiting commissioning.

With new 321 units awaiting commissioning 86260 waits at Cambridge to take the 1100 Kings Lynn – Liverpool St forward on 091288

I then did a 310 unit bash to Audley End, 310’s through Leighton were getting thin on the ground by December 88 so it was good to sit in the booked boiling hot power car and enjoyable the familiar motor whines plus a ticking compressor…
It was strange bailing at Audley End with the wires now up, very different in character from the early 80s when it was the regular leaping point off steam heat and nb 31/37/47’s. 310079 returned me to Cambridge and i havent bailed at Audley End since!
310088 put in another noisy run South on the 1505 Cambridge – Liverpool St for another blast of A stock to Euston Square.
Well my hopes of a good night for roarers on the Evening Cobblers didnt start well with cans on 1B06 and 1B07 so i whiled away the time photting a still shiny new 90 on another down service. Then 85037 roared off from the A siding and eventually dropped on the stock of 1B08 1745 Euston – Northampton.

The wide marklites show yummy “cans” on 1B06 and 1B07 commuter whilst an unidentified 90 waits with a down Manchester at Euston on 091288
Front coach seats to enjoy the hums, pops and screams that only a roarer could deliver on 13 Mk I’s at 100 mph plus proved a good end to an enjoyable day.
