COMMENTS – Well, we kept the schedule, or all but!! It was one of those runs which had me longing for the days of Gresley, and indeed, Stanier Pacifics! I had been hoping to be banked on Beattock but it was not to be and I suppose load 12 was plenty for a Class 40. At least the Black 5 showed some signs of urgency!! My only run terminating at Princes Street!!
We move into the next phase of WCML motive power…….

COMMENTS – Not much wrong with this!! Still 75 mph maximum over all Scottish routes. Significant easing of schedule ex-Carstairs compared to 1965. Pity about the signal stop – in that time Waverley was about as easy to enter as KX!!!
Fast forward a decade or so – Penmanshiel Tunnel has collapsed, and some of the ECML expresses have been routed via Carlisle and Carstairs north of Newcastle.

departed Carlisle TIME arrived Waverley 5.25 early
The background to the next run is as follows. My late parents had been staying for Christmas at West Calder. We had decided to go out on the WCML for the day – a brief visit to Lancaster to cover a Central-ManVic relief then back to Carlisle for the afternoon. So, the relief having produced a roarer 85029, we were just crossing the footbridge at Carlisle when this whistling noise brought a sudden halt. We arrived back on the down side just as 40106 (know to all at the time as “The Green Goddess” drew in – coach labels said “Edinburgh”. We waited for the 40 to come off, but nothing happened!!! What’s this train, and is the loco coming off, I asked the Inspector – Control Relief ex ManVic and no it’s going through, came the reply. We were all on in the proverbial!!! Incidentally the schedule is courtesy of the Timing Section in Buchanan House!!!
A few months after Jim’s epic climb of Beattock behind 40106 the “green goddess” is seen on Crewe depot on April 4th 1983 sadly withdrawn

Forward to the summer of 1984 – the miner’s strike – lots of nb locos hanging around in Scotland with not a lot to do – answer put them on passenger trains – we were not grumbling, apart perhaps from the complaint that we could not be in three places at the same time!!! So the final offering has been included because of the nigh-mystical massiveness of the motive power concerned – a Thornaby 47 and a pair of 20s!!
