Chinnor diesel gala, Sat March 21st 2026

TC’s fast car with Mike Lewis co driving picked me up at a sunny Leighton around 7am. Light traffic meant plenty time to get to Chinnor where at just after 8 the main car park was well filled.

31128 soon arrived and we were pleased at being allowed to join for the short run to the yard along with most of the other 100 plus aboard. 37418 (my last haulage behind 418 was Rhymney – CF  in Nov 2001) then worked down the hill to Risboro where an immaculate 26043 was failed prior to working her booked  train. 47402, 66737 (dud!) and 47715 added to the fun. 26043 was battered to work the 1410 ex Risboro and very enjoyable it was too.

The gronk brake vans were excellent although the restriction to 10 passengers in each seemed a little low, but i managed to get aboard for a “double score”.

The last run, the 1720 Princes Risborough – Chinnor, proved the best. The front coach was fairly lightly filled unlike the load 5 Mk I’s and dead 47715 on the rear giving 37418 plenty to thrash nicely on the long climb up to Chinnor. To quote my colleague “more thrash on that run than you’d get all day stuck in a coffin on some railtour”.
