Class 25’s on the Midland (Bedford to St Pancras)
The first 25’s to be delivered to Cricklewood for use on the Midland began in July 1963 with 5203 (later 25053) – 5211 (later 25061) starting with freight, parcels and occasional passenger turns across the Southern end of the Midland. Replacing steam for a few years until 1968 the class had booked passenger turns like 2C88 the 0754 Harpenden – Moorgate commuter train until replaced by DMU’s.
After that class 25’s despite their large numbers locally were unusual on Passenger turns working on occasions
1/ Bedford – St Pancras commuter services
2/ St Pancras – Leicester main line turns (in pairs)
3/ Replacing failures on main line turns
4/ Adex/Merrymakers/Railtours
The classes always unusual association with Midland passenger turns saw at least 148 different locos feature with the final local passenger turn operated by snow plough fitted 25059 (one of the original Cricklewood locos in 1964) as late as Jan 87.
Mention must be made of the famous “terrible ten” these were class 25’s 5213-5222 (later 25063-25072), why terrible, because they to us Bedford/Luton lads were so common doing everything from pick up freight to top link passenger!
