Class 46’s on the Midland, sample workings 1962-94

A big thanks to Scott Currie, Mike Lewis and Ian Saunders for their help with the gen.

Class 46’s on the Midland South of Leicester have varied from common with 3 or 4 different class 46’s working daily in the 60’s and early 70’s, to rare by the late 70’s and 80’s. Introduction of air conditioned stock on the Sheffield – St Pancras in the mid 70’s, plus declining freight traffic were key factors in this decline.

D138-165  (46001 – 46028) were all allocated to the Midland from new, D165 (46028) famously carried green livery much later than her class mates and sticks in our memory. D163 (46026) was the sole namer of the class so again good memories of her on local turns remain. 

However all the 46’s visited St Pancras, a few got to Dunstable! and most passed the likes of Luton in the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s as shown below. This is despite being allocated to Bristol or Gateshead by the mid 70’s.

So class 46s on the Midland were always considered something special to many of us
