Class 58 gala day, Sunday Nov 6th 1988

Thanks to Dave Spencer for the gen, phots and quote below…

“Absolutely Dreadful!” – “Saltley had no electric heat locos till late in the day. 45106 departed light engine to Derby after 1030, the loco had worked a railtour the previous day. If 58007 had not failed every Euston departure (to Nuneaton) up to the 1818 departure would have been a 58!

As it was NINE consecutive up departues ex BNS were 58 hauled! with 6 different 58’s namely 58003, 58005, 58007, 58014, 58015 and 58021 all performing, what a Sunday!

58014 and 58021 await dragging duties at the South end of New St on Sunday Nov 6th 1988

The Nuneaton drags that day produced..

Whilst one or two Class 58’s were regular enough on the drags for 6 different 58’s to produce was an event, as  Dave mentions 9 consecutive class 58 departures on Euston services to Nuneaton was never to occur again… Shades of how desperate the motive situation was that Sunday also saw 31437 working Wolves- Shrewsbury services all day too….Remarkable!

58021 arrives at Nuneaton dragging 86245 on the 1028 Wolves – Euston, the “can” will go forward South from Nuneaton and the 58 return to New St on a down drag, November 6th 1988

58014 at New St dragging 86204 on the 1040 Euston – Wolves on Sunday November 6th 1988

Having replaced “bursted” 58007 on a drag earlier, 47110 arrives at Nuneaton with 86204 in tow on the 1430 Wolves – Euston on Sunday November 6th 1988

What a day!
