Class 86 into 2021
When 2020 ended there were 9 86’6s still available for service namely:
86604, 86607, 86608, 86609, 86613, 86632, 86637, 86638, 86639..
It was expected that the class would fade away quietly in the first few days of January.
Fortunately as listed below this wasnt the case and the Leighton area saw at least
86607, 86608, 86613, 86632 and 86639 working liner turns locally in 2021.
Friday 5th February saw 86613 and 86632 work through Leighton on 4M45 0250 Felixstowe – Garston liners for the very last time bringing 55 years of regular class 86 operation to an end. 86613 and 86632 became crew trainer locos from Feb 8th working Crewe – Northampton (via BS) light engine turns which ended on Feb 16th..
Considered “rancid cans” by many including me when “roarers” and “sevens”, were often displaced by “cans”, but from 2007 they soldiered on alone (the roarers and sevens were gone by then) on liners singly and in pairs, sadly there time was up in February 2021..
The Phots
The main turn for which local photography was 4M45 0250 Felixstowe – Garston which had a passing time through Leighton of 0730. In the dark winter months of january and February this was quite a challenge to phot. Throw in occasional early running, lockdown, rain, frost and fog then you can imagine the desperation needed…..

A real bonus on 130121 saw 4M45 2 hours late, with 86608 and 86607 approaching Leighton
Better light but a damn unit not helping! 86608 and 86607 pass Leighton station with 4M45 on 150121
A wet morning and running in her usual 0715 Saturday slot sees 86608 and 86607 on 4M45 on 160121
A last fling on 4M87 with a more sociable though still gloomy 1600 passing time sees 86608 and 86639 pass a soggy Old Linslade on 200121.
Flooding then ended this diagram for the rest of the week..

And thats it, 86613 and 86632 pass the “tree” at Old Linslade with 4M45 for the last time ever on 050221, farewell class 86 you’ve served the WCML proudly 1966-2021
