Thanks to Jim Bourton for the memories and logs
Let’s turn our attention to Summer Saturdays – there were some dated services which could be relied on (most of the time!!!) to provide something interesting in the way of motive power. One such departure from Edinburgh Waverley was 1M94 0915 SO to Blackpool North. I usually travelled on this only to Carlisle, but the following represents the only time I covered it throughout. One of those runs where the performance was nigh irrelevant – the joy lay in the haulage!! There are days in one’s records, which provide justification for all the expense and suffering cause in pursuit of our hobby/obsession. 28/06/80 was one of these days!!
DATE :- Saturday, June 28,1980
TRAIN :- 1M94 0915 SO Edinburgh Waverley-Blackpool North
LOCOMOTIVES :- 37096 (GD). to Carstairs
81021 (GW) to Preston
40079 (LO) to Blackpool North

A busy scene at Stirling North, 47413 arrives with 1C89 Aberdeen – Carstairs mail whilst 37096 waits for the road after working tanks to Alloa on June 1st 1982

“Roaring beast” at rest. 81021 has screamed and howled most of the way from Euston to Northampton with 1B07 1718 “Cobbler” from Euston on September 9th 1985.

40181 and 40079 are on rare track for a passenger train in coming off the embankment on the far West of Kingmoor yard with RESL’s epic Waverly tour on October 13th 1984
