Newark – Crewe took the best part of 2 hours 30 minutes courtesy of DMU’s each way to do it!!!! This may explain why I did not do it often!!! The only bit of light relief were the scrap lines if one entered Derby (Midland) from Spondon via the Chaddesden curve – where the football ground is now located!!

Whistling beast at Guide Bridge. 40144 eases under the DC wires with a freight for Healy Mills early on March 30th 1977. Perhaps split box 40’s looked the best on this impressive class of loco. even in 1962 eh Jim?
