A December 1985 All Line Rover
A fair few of us will know the predicament, you’ve cleared a weeks All Line with the
Mrs weeks before, you hadnt gone out on the trains at all the previous weekend and yet come departure time for your rover, she throws a strop. This cost me an hour or so apologising and there were howls of anguish when my initially planned train 1S07 roared through Leighton just ahead of my 2 x 310 unit combo. S19 always roared i kept telling myself as i wilted in the heat of 310095’s power car, S19 that night got 86236!

I awoke bleary eyed at a chill Waverly around 0530, that horrible distillery tang filled the air. Still fortified by a coffee and a few mince pies i joined my Northampton colleague behind a dull, but steaming nicely 47156. Tardy running made it look a bit tight at Kirkcaldy for the up Dundee so we bailed at Kinghorn. A required shack and very nice it was too with the lights twinkling around the cove below, Kinghorn saw a bellow too as 26026 piloted 27005 on the 0620 Dundee – Edinburgh. The pair were right time, we would have been withered at Kirkcaldy perhaps.
More 27 mileage then followed, over in Glasgow we hoped for a 27 or 25 on the GSW but 47443 produced. I assume i did this as my mate rated it, I didnt! The internal overnight with plenty room beckoned later.

A solid night’s doss with 47614 on the Highland line followed by 47049 steaming “over the top”. More Circuit moves then a required 303 for 7 miles on the Cathcart circle. This move allowed you to view the sidings and power on the Clyde Bridge and likely power for later services and not to our surprise there were no” roarers” or “rats” hovering.
A failed 37411 being dragged in by 37026 on an Oban – Glasgow was laughed at back at Queen St before a good run out of “chariot” 27001 from Waverly to Leuchars. We picked up V62 at Cupar to be sure of a seat but the usual wedge didnt produce that night, nor did a “roarer” on V62 either!

Friday December 13th 1985
Things at Carlisle around 2am were looking good 85007 had arrived on S06 Stranny
and 85023 was hovering in the centre road, lights on crewed up. Once 85023 was on the
Up Stranny we found a declassified early Mk II BFK and stretched out either side of these supremely well cushioned, comfortabe compos and dossed out. Next thing we were passing WN with no down “roarer” action at Euston, Dave went to Waterloo for Hanktons, me to Victoria.
A one way blast on required 73111 on the 0845 Gatwick was enough for me, these were the most boring trains in the world with their rancid coffin stock and silent locos up front. A VEP forward then a fun “Crompton” day out with required 33003 taken for over 100 miles from Soton to Bristol, and required “slim” 33201 was also raked in too. A mileage move on 33042 from Salisbury to Exeter and back to Basingstoke ended an enjoyable day.

As the light fades 33201 at Temple Meads with the 1610 Brighton service on December 13th 1985
Saturday December 14th 1985
Basingstoke around midnight meant it was the delights of a table 158 overnight, plenty trains, ample seats but little time for sustained doss. Required 73114 on the down Weymouth TPO was a bonus but our only real doss was on 33022 all shacks 0550 Pompey – Bristol with us finally stirring from our slumbers at Bradford – on Avon around 0820!
More “Hanktons” followed with 33008 a bonus on the 0938 Exeter – Waterloo. Then it was up to Euston in the hope a “Roarer” would be kicked out. That old favourite turn for getting an 85 back to home shed was the 1510 Euston – Holyhead which obliged today with 85006.
As expected 85006 vanished at Crewe, she wasnt going back on the next Holyhead – Euston. Still the Preston – Coventry beckoned, another good roarer turn but today it was a reasonable 80mph restricted 86037….a Stafford bail, for rancid 86261 forward, 40122 on a down Traintours charter sounded and looked good at Stafford
310086 got me home around midnight, fortunately the mrs was dossed!

Sunday December 15th 1985
Todays plan was to do the Gatwicks am and a “roarer” on one of the usual Sunday 1400/1500 Euston – Wolves “roarer” turns out and back. Unfortunately the mrs had planned an afternoon social event (yawn) so it was a required 73118 out and back on the Gatwick and that was that!
