Notes:
Phil did this trip “single manned”, his firs solo “bash” to Belgium. He stopped in Oostende at a hotel we had used a few times. Can’t go wrong there, plenty of reasonable priced hotels, virtually everyone speaks English and plenty of places to eat.
16 winners on the trip including the elusive (to me) 2215, one of five of these I never had.
Train times taken from the Belgian timetable 10.06.2001 – 15.06.2002.
On 1st February 2002, Phil has both 20’s listed as powering, I would have expected one of them to have been dead in train.

Notes:
According to the timetable the 17.30 Cork – Dublin Heuston was booked from Thurles at 18.51. The 15.20 Dublin Heuston – Cork was booked from Thurles at 16.47, so Phil must have known this train was running two hours plus late. Back at Limerick Junction, the 18.33 shuttle to Limerick would have been at least 40 late leaving.
Mike Lewis adds that he believes the 15.20 Dublin Heuston – Cork was delayed by a broken rail at Salins.
Also Kilarney – Tralee was shut for engineering work for the whole trip, buses replaced trains. Information from Mike Lewis with thanks.

Notes:
In theory there was a 13.51 Holyhead – Euston which would connect with the ferry. As Phil has nothing listed from Holyhead to Crewe, and was around two hours later at Crewe, I suspect replacement road transport was in operation due to engineering work. The diversion via Bescot put Phil back at Milton Keynes at 19.34.

Notes:
The original idea for this trip was to travel with Eurostar and through Belgium, however a few days before it was announced that there was to be a strike involving the Fire Brigade staff that cover the Channel Tunnel, with no services able to run. After some “googling” we got a flight from Stansted to Koln with Germanwings, part of the Luftansa group.
We used IBIS hotels each night apart from the first night, which was an overnight.
We had a number of locomotive diagrams from “European Rail Gen” which were a great help.

Notes:
Phil’s last class 90 for haulage, and for a long time he doubted if he would get it. When Freightliner started hiring two class 90’s to Anglia to help out on the Norwich service, it was just a matter of time. I believe he was tipped off that it was out. 86234 was running around 50 minutes late.
