Notes:
Looking at Phil’s haulages between Reading and Oxford and vice versa, again there is some matching up to do.

Dealing with Reading – Oxford, I have 47157, 47448 and 50038. 47157 is listed on Railgen-Archive for 1E63 11.40 Poole – Leeds / Newcastle between Reading and Birmingham, and 47448 is listed for 1M50 09.07 Brighton – Manchester. 50038 must have done 1C40 15.00 Paddington – Hereford.

Dealing with Oxford – Reading, I have 31209 and 47456. 31209 is listed on Railgen-Archive for 1O15 09.24 Manchester – Poole between Birmingham NS and Reading. 47456 must have done 1V41 11.22 Liverpool – Paddington.

Notes:
With reference to 47085, this worked a 12.00 Norwich – Liverpool St. 19.36 Liverpool St. – Norwich (20.53 off Cambridge), and a 23.15 Norwich – Liverpool St. This is due to engineering work on the mainline south of Ipswich. I assume this engineering work started around 12.00. 47155 and 47162 also worked via this route. Gen from Class 47 list and RailGen Archive.

The 1979/1980 shows a 16.20 Cambridge – Liverpool St., first stop Audley End. Phil has this train logged as 16.11 ex Cambridge and booked same time at Newport (16.40). Maybe a Winter alteration with the train retimed and additional stops put in at Shelford, Whittlesford and Great Chesterford.

Phil has 37115 and 47180 both listed for Norwich – Ipswich. 37115 is listed on Railgen-Archive for 1N27 11.42 Norwich – Liverpool St. and 47180 is shown for 1K23 08.58 Yarmouth – Liverpool St. from Norwich.

Notes:
Phil’s haulages between Perth and Dundee and vice versa proved a bit of a puzzle to match up.

Dealing with Perth to Dundee first, I know the three locomotives involved, 26028, 27034 and 40103 and I know the three services used, from his diary file. I can match 40103 from the “gen” on Railgen Archive, but I cannot prove which type 2 worked the 14.44 Glasgow QS – Dundee and which type 2 did the 16.54 Glasgow QS – Dundee.

Looking at Dundee – Perth, the three locomotives involved were 27010, 40117 and 40184, and again I know the three services involved. 40117 is shown on Railgen Archive for 1M53 09.25 Aberdeen – Birmingham NS, which I assume it worked to Mossend Yard. I am also assuming it went back north on 1S62 11.03 Birmingham NS – Aberdeen (due 18.25), which would in theory put it in place for Phil to have it on the 19.50 Aberdeen – Glasgow QS. 40184 is on Railgen Archive for 1A21 07.40 Glasgow – Aberdeen, and I assume this worked back with 1T35 13.40 Aberdeen – Glasgow QS, like 40058 did the following day on Railgen Archive. 27010 by a process of elimination must have been on the 17.15 Dundee – Perth.

Notes:
Once again, Phil’s haulages between Perth and Dundee and vice versa proved a bit of a puzzle to match up.

Dealing with Perth to Dundee first, I know the three locomotives involved, 27001, 40158, and 47274 and I know the three services used, from his diary file. I can’t prove which locomotive did which train, although I would guess the type 2 did the 16.54 Glasgow QS – Dundee rather than an Aberdeen train.

Looking at Dundee – Perth, the two locomotives involved were 40038 and 40160 and a third service involving a DMU. Phil has the DMU shown on his records for 2T46 17.33 Dundee – Glasgow QS, which in theory would have been loco hauled. Again I am unable to prove from the Gen sites which loco worked which train.

Notes:
Looking at Phil’s haulages between Bath Spa and Bristol TM and vice versa, again there is some matching up to do.

Dealing with Bath Spa – Bristol TM, I have 31424, 33004 and 50023. 50023 is an obvious for 1B12 16.20 Paddington – Bristol TM. I would suggest that it is probable that 33004 worked 1V21 07.46 Portsmouth Harbour – Cardiff and 31424 worked 2V59 09.00 Weymouth – Bristol TM based on what normally worked these trains.

Regarding Bristol TM – Bath Spa, I am unable to confirm which loco (33002 or 33009) worked which train. I am also unable to confirm the workings for 46056 and 47091.

Notes:
Perth – Dundee notes again.

Dealing with Perth – Dundee first. The three locomotives involved were 37027, 40060 and 47274. RailGen Archive confirms 37027 on 2L53 16.54 Glasgow QS – Dundee, and has 40060 on 1T50 17.50 Aberdeen – Glasgow QS. I have assumed from that 40060 must have done 1A36 13.35 Glasgow – Aberdeen (due 16.30). By elimination 47274 must be 1A49 15.35 Glasgow QS – Aberdeen.

Dundee – Perth, the three locomotives are 26041, 27021 and 40066. Unable to prove anything, but a fair assumption would be 40066 on 1T58 19.50 Aberdeen – Glasgow QS, with the type 2’s working the other services.

Looking at Phil’s haulages between Bath Spa and Bristol TM and vice versa, again there is some matching up to do.

Dealing with Bath Spa – Bristol TM, I have 31258, 33027 and 47344. 47344 is an obvious for the two Paddington departures (partly as it is in his logs twice). I would suspect that 31258 worked 2V59 09.00 Weymouth – Bristol TM and 33027 worked 1V29 14.15 Portsmouth Harbour – Bristol TM based on what normally worked these trains.

Dealing with Bristol TM – Bath Spa, I have 31401, 33002 and 33004. I suspect that 31401 worked 2O60 16.14 Bristol TM – Weymouth and the 33’s worked 1O73 11.00 Bristol TM – Portsmouth, and 1O87 16.00 Cardiff – Portsmouth, although I have no idea which 33 did which train.

I am also unable to confirm the workings for 47032 and 47508.

Dealing with Oxford – Reading, I have 31416 and 47122. 31416 is listed on Railgen Archive for 1V41 11.22 Liverpool – Paddington from Birmingham NS, and 47122 is listed for 1A51 11.40 Worcester Shrub Hill – Paddington. These match with Phil’s moves.

Looking at Phil’s haulages between Reading and Oxford and vice versa, again there is some matching up to do.

Dealing with Reading – Oxford, I have 47054, 47421 and 50043. 47054 is shown on Railgen-Archive for 1M13 11.50 Paddington – Birmingham NS. No information on the other two, but probably likely 47421 was on the 09.20 ex Brighton and 50043 on the 15.00 ex Paddington.

Dealing with Oxford – Reading, I have 47013 and 47471 and 47513. 47013 is shown on Railgen-Archive for 1O19 07.52 Newcastle – Poole from Birmingham NS – Reading, Regarding 47471, it is on Railgen-Archive for 1M01 19.00 Paddington – Manchester so reasonable that it worked in to Paddington on the 14.38 ex Birmingham NS. Also 47513 is shown for 1M10 06.20 Paddington – Manchester to Birmingham NS, so again reasonable that it returned with the 08.22 Liverpool – Paddington from Birmingham NS.

Notes:
Reading – Oxford, yet again.

Dealing with Reading – Oxford, I have 47464, 47477, 47545 & 50010. 47477 is shown on Railgen-Archive for 1B78 12.55 Paddington – Worcester Shrub Hill and Phil also had on its return working, 1A51 16.03 Worcester Shrub Hill – Paddington. Regarding the other northbound services, 47545 is shown for 1O19 07.52 Newcastle – Poole from Birmingham NS – Reading, I suspect Phil had it back north on 1M23 14.55 Bournemouth – Liverpool. This would leave 47464 for 1M50 09.20 Brighton – Manchester. Despite 47464 being a Scottish loco we know it was in the area as it is shown for 1M01 19.00 Paddington – Manchester as far as Birmingham NS.

Dealing with Oxford – Reading, I have 47080 and 47547 and 50034. 47080 is shown on Railgen-Archive for 1V41 11.22 Liverpool – Paddington from Birmingham NS. 47545 is shown for 1O19 07.52 Newcastle – Poole from Birmingham NS – Reading, I suspect Phil had it back north on 1M23 14.55 Bournemouth – Liverpool.

I have a problem with the class 50’s listed. I suspect Phil may have them listed the wrong way round, Railgen-Archive shows 50010 on 1A51 11.40 Worcester Shrub Hill – Paddington, a train Phil caught that day but Phil has 50010 listed for haulage from Reading to Oxford. 50034 is listed on Railgen-Archive for 1A65 07.26 Cheltenham – Paddington, due Paddington 09.42, which doesn’t really fit with Phil’s notes of it working either 1A51 11.40 ex Worcester or 1V48 14.38 ex Birmingham.

My suspicions are:
No.1 Phil had 50010 on 1A51 11.40 Worcester Shrub Hill – Paddington.
No.2 Phil actually had 50034 Reading – Oxford rather than was listed, and that it probably was on 1C40 15.00 Paddington – Hereford.
No.3 With the 50’s known/presumed, 47547 is by a process of elimination the loco on 1V48 14.38 Birmingham NS – Paddington.

Having said all this about 50010 and 50034, I have assumed that the information on Rail-Gen Archive is correct.

Thanks again to “TC” for all his hard work compiling the late Driver Phil’s moves
