The 1982 timetable started on 17th May 1982, and this was the planned date for the start of the Electric service between Bedford and London with the new class 317 EMU’s. The 1982 GBTT dated 17th May 1982 – 15th May 1983 was printed with the planned timetable and the WTT showed the new local service between Bedford and St. Pancras / Moorgate as booked for EMU’s and no more loco hauled “commuters”.

As we know this did not happen, the dispute over the class 317’s, one man operation and the role of the guard carried on and the new 317’s remained in the sidings.

There was an “interim timetable” introduced on Table 52 from 17th May 1982, which was basically the same frequency as the previous timetable using the existing DMU’s and loco hauled commuter sets. The off peak service was the same as before with an hourly Bedford – St. Pancras, fast to/from Elstree and an all stations Luton – St. Pancras and vice versa. The “interim timetable” was dated until 3rd October 1982, however the dispute over the new trains was not settled and another “interim timetable” was introduced from 4th October 1982 to run until further notice. The October timetable saw the start of the run down of the loco hauled service on Table 53, with a couple of trains going over to HST’s.

I have decided to leave the DMU headcodes out from this point . I appreciate that the timetable on Table 52 remained broadly the same, but I cannot say for the certain that the headcodes also stayed the same.

Table 53 had seen many changes, many trains had stops at Luton and St. Albans removed as the new faster frequent electric service service should have seen a half hourly service introduced between the local stations. When the “interim timetable” came out a number of stops were put back in on Table 53, however St. Albans still saw a huge reduction in trains on Table 53 now stopping there.

With the “interim timetable” in place, this was what the morning loco hauled service looked like.

From what I can make out from October 1982, based on the second “interim timetable” and “2H82” there was an increase in the loco hauled commuters with the following running. I assume this was down to the reliability of the class 127 DMU’s. This was the position with the loco hauled commuters from October 1982:

I don’t have the details of any ECS moves for these, but from memory I am fairly certain by May 1982 the sets were stabled overnight at Bedford in the carriage sidings south of the station. These were built for the class 317’s and the increased timetable.

From January 2th 1983, there was another planned increase with the following going over to loco haulage, this information is from “3H82”, a supplement issued for the headcode book 2H82.
