Notes:
Copied from 12th November 1982. 45113’s working to Cricklewood might be the ECS off 2G21 17.54 St. Pancras – Bedford (due 18.58). I know that sets were stabled at Bedford, but I don’t have any information regarding which sets. The timings would suggest that this working followed the 19.10 Bedford – St. Pancras DMU all the way.

Notes:
6V68 / 6E50 shown in the 1982 – 1983 “Working timetable of Freight Train Services” to run on Monday & Wednesday nights only, with 6E50 booked to run on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. From memory I seem to remember “the tanks” being pretty much a daily runner, so this must be a extra working. Usually the preserve of a select batch of “IM” 47’s, 47050 at the time being a Bescot locomotive would have made this a fairly unusual working. Phil would only have been booked to work with the train to/from Cricklewood, so staying onto Bedford would have been with a sociable driver for a lift home.
Although the HST into London on Saturday night was booked, this is Phil’s first recorded haulage between Bedford and St. Pancras on one of these, and the first of many.

45005 booked working was probably 0B52 21.30 light engine Cricklewood TMD – Northolt Sidings, to work the Northolt – Calvert “Binliner”. At Calvert the loaded train was shunted into the terminal and the loco returned to Northolt with an empty set (maybe off the previous night?). After shunting at Northolt, the loco ran back as 0M00 03.13 Northolt Sidings – Cricklewood TMD, due 03.56.

Notes:
25181 likely to be an early 6A40 16.35 Luton – Willesden Brent Sidings. This diagram is a Cricklewood “job” with the locomotive working across to Willesden in the morning for 6C60 06.05 Willesden Brent Sidings, and working back with 6A40 in the afternoon, and back light to Cricklewood. The 1982 “Working Timetable of Freight Train Services” shows the loco off 6C60 as booked to run to Bedford Holding Sidings, and returning as 0A40 15.23 from Bedford HS. But I have found that quite often the loco stables at Cricklewood, probably to suit where the crew are based.
Unable to identify 45124’s working.

One possibility is that 31131 was on 3C01 10.03 Nottingham PCD – St. Pancras, and Phil hitched a ride to Luton, although I don’t understand why he didn’t go through to London with it if that is the case. 3C01 was booked about 20 minutes in front of 1C49. 1C49 was booked to stop at Luton (13.53-13.55).

At Calvert the loaded train was shunted into the terminal and the loco returned to Northolt with an empty set (maybe off the previous night?). After shunting at Northolt, the loco ran back as 0M00 03.13 Northolt Sidings – Cricklewood TMD, due 03.56.

Notes:
Phil’s timings for 45115 & 45116 match the entries in the WTT Section CJ 17 May 1982 – 15 May 1983. 45115 isn’t shown as a pick up at Cricklewood, but the timings given (Cricklewood 01.20 – Bedford 01.57) give this little option of being anything else. 3C01 on a Saturday is shown as terminating at Luton and running ECS to Cricklewood. Phil has an arrival time of 14.37.
The 1983 timetable was due to start on Monday 16th May 1983.
Actually it wasn’t as simple as that. Table 53 covering the Inter-city service to Derby / Nottingham and Sheffield did change on that day with the a lot of the services going over to HST’s.
The local service was not ready, the dispute over the use of driver only class 317’s had dragged on and even though a few units were being used in service and for crew training and test running, they were nowhere near ready for a full introduction.
Phil’s notes show that the local service carried on, using a combination of DMU’s, 317’s and some loco hauled peak hour workings.
The full electric service eventually started on Monday 11th July 1983. I have attached a copy of the front page of “Electric News”, which was produced by the local management. This was “lifted” off the net, I don’t have the actual magazine.
1983 was a big year for change locally, with the 317’s and HST’s replacing the DMU’s and the loco hauled service. As a result Phil’s loco hauled work was greatly reduced, although there is still a fair bit of freight work.
I must express my thanks to Steve Kemp and Mick Parker for the continued use of their WTT’s. The 1983-1984 section CJ was very useful . Phil has a copy of “High Speed Train Services 1983-1984 Timetable”, a Peter Watts Publication, and I have used this along with the WTT for the HST headcodes.

Notes
Phil had 317301 a number of times between 5th April 1983 and 26th May 1983. None of these were in passenger service as the unit was used for test workings. Before entering service it and 317325 were involved in a collision with a class 45 at Cricklewood which resulted in one of the original cars of 317301 being scrapped and a new car being made. Phil finally “scored” this unit for driving in May 2002 from Bedford to Moorgate.

56072 & 56083 both shown in Phil’s logs for the journey back from Northfleet. Bearing in mind that Phil wasn’t back at Cricklewood until 03.35, I guess that 56083 probably failed with 56072 coming light from Hither Green to rescue it.

It looks like 47312 must have been a failure at Langley oil terminal, although nothing in Phil’s notes to suggest that 47312 came back dead in train.

Train details for 45136 and 45134 are from the “Working Timetable Section CJ, 16th May 1983 – 13th May 1984”.
Phil’s times which are “Bedford 01.19 – St. Pancras 02.33, St. Pancras 03.45 – Luton 04.36 and Luton “05.50 – St. Pancras 06.40” are a near enough match. Phil doesn’t list the St. Albans times and I have no consist, so nothing to explain that this was to drop off the mail van.

Notes:
25164 is likely to have been on 4C25 18.34 St. Albans – Bedford (Parcels). The WTT shows the engine for this was actually booked from Bedford Holding Sidings, running as 0C25 16.30 Bedford – St. Albans via Cricklewood depot to reverse. This meant it could pick up the van (s) from the siding by the Signalbox off the down fast dropped off 1C03 at 04.10 that morning. 4C25 was booked St. Albans 18.34, Luton 18.52 – 19.01, Bedford 19.26. Once at Bedford this was then booked to work 4C25 19.45 Bedford – St. Pancras, booked Luton 20.09-2014, St. Albans 20.30-20.35 and St. Pancras 20.59.
25245 likely to be 1P30 20.15 St. Pancras – Derby (Parcels). All the above from “WTT Section CJ 16th May 1983 – 13th May 1984”,

This period was really the start of the rundown of Cricklewood Depot. The introduction of HST’s saw a huge drop in the amount of locomotives required. It was not unusual for locomotives to be stabled at St. Pancras or Churchyard Sidings, rather than at Cricklewood.

43074+43085 1E42 21.20 St. Pancras – Sheffield St. Pancras – Bedford 49.75
Notes:
25138 is likely to have been on 4C25 18.34 St. Quite often though 0C25 would come from either St. Pancras or Cricklewood. On this occasion 25138 did not come through to Bedford, presumably there was no traffic, so the train stabled at Luton until its booked return time.
