Back in the 1970’s this was the yellow container train with “Easidispose” branding on the side. Two trains ran a day carrying London’s waste to use as landfill in the empty clay pits at Stewartby. The 1979 timetable change took effect from 14th May 1979.

I have gone a little bit off topic here as I have had a detailed look at how the loco hauled “Bedford Commuters” were resourced and where the empty stock moves for each service came from. An interesting point to note is that three stocks were booked to run north on a Friday night during the summer and return early on a Monday morning. I assume this is to help resource the summer saturday timetable, but it would also explain how a “peak” could be noted on a “Bedford commuter” on a Friday evening and then turn up in Devon on Saturday morning.

With reference to 47424, Phil used to tell this story. The “47” caught fire, and limped into Market Harborough. The 47 was in a right state with the sides all bowed in. After the fire brigade had done their stuff 45074 worked forward. As the train was now very late Phil and his driver bailed out at Leicester and returned south on 1M10.
