Far North station leaps 1975 – 2026

A minor triumph personally last week when I scratched “gorgeous” Georgemas Jn in the pouring rain and wind! For the first time, i actually left the station, having just walked along the platform changing portions before. Although i still need to do Brora for a proper train move, the Far North, the best line in Scotland by far,  is almost complete having done all 26 stations plus a closed one as a sprog.

As listed below i have had proper loco hauled moves at Wick, Thurso, Lairg, Ardgay, Tain, Dingwall, Muir of Ord and Inverness, the rest being units. Back in the day though you wouldnt dream of bailing off a 26 at the likes of Altnabreac as you would loose mileage.

Key – AM – Ancient move (1969-79)

OM – 27055    1800 Wick-Inverness Wick – Inverness 290185

severe weather meant most of the local tractors were stuck on Lochgorm with boiler issues, Type 2’s to the rescue!

Far North “tippie”. 27055 at Wick prior to working 2N37 1800 Wick – Inverness on January 29th 1985. Due severe weather many type 2’s were covering for absent 37’s. 27055 worked solely Wick-Inverness that evening, her boiler a strong one.

37421 basks in a brief burst of winter sun prior to departure from Wick with 2H62 1212 to Inverness on a mild January 14th 1989.

A run through the bleak Flow country beckons for 158717 on the 1234 Wick – Inverness on January 10th 2019

Bailed at Georgemas for a first off station nose around whilst the unit went to Thurso and back

Thanks to Dave Spencer for this fine view of 26035 and 26034 shunting the Thurso van at Georgemas Jn on September 21st 1983. 26035 and 26034 had worked North on the 0640 ex Inverness, 37035 was the branch loco

“Gorgeous Georgemas” looks a bit bleak in the snow 27051 awaiting 2K10 1517 Thurso portion turn on January 29th 1985. “Tippies” were always rare on the Far North

37262 outsude the Thurso train shed with a portion of the rioutous RESL “Sutherland Highlander” tour from the South on May 4th 1985

57601 the “Purple Ronnie” under the Thurso trainshed having worked the overnight SRPS tour from Linlithgow on June 23rd 2007. 40145 had done the main slog North. The “Ronnie” was standing in for an absent Deltic and SRPS wisely restricted its milelage to just Georgemas-Thurso and back rather than full return mileage move South.

After having been turned at Georgemas, a late 70’s style headcoded 40145 arrives at Thurso with the return SRPS tour to Linlithgow on June 23rd 2007. 57601 worked the tour to Georgemas leaving 40145 to attack the far North line in poor weather, a superb atmospheric run!

Wandered the fudge coloured tracks to kill the fester time, only life seen was 2 deer! An access dispute saw the station closed from Nov 2023 – Dec 2025. A new entrance path seemed to have resolved the issue for now as the station was open for traffic in January 2026

“Tippies” power North! 27051 and 27055 storm towards Forsinard with the 1130 Inverness – Wick/Thurso on January 29th 1985. The severe weather meant all sorts of type 2 pairings, great fun!

The severe low temperatures and deep snow in Northern Caithness meant pairs were on all far North trains all week as insurance against boiler failure.

Deep and crisp and even at Lairg on January 27th 1985. 27055 has just arrived with 1K02 0805 Inverness – Lairg. We were hours late due awaiting connectioning papers at Inverness and the “tippie’s” boiler had given up at Dingwall making the train a tad cold.
