“Gone fishing”, All line Rover, Feb 86

81022 reverses the emcars of the 0747 Cardiff – Glasgow out of a wintry Glasgow Central on February 21st 1986

Thursday Feb 20th

A lunchtime departure from work with a 310 South to Euston. Here I purchased the “Freedom of the World” a week’s All line Rover. In bright sun I deposited myself at the North end of platform 15 to watch proceedings.

The Euston traction arranger was busy getting both 81021 and 85012 off diagram after arriving on up trains. The rare 47368 arrived dragging a broken 81010 on a Brum-Euston and was also banished to WN. As usual the roarers came back out to play on the evening cobblers and my “top fish” (81007) obliged on the 1718 Euston-Northampton. I opted to leap blind at the Keynes for the 1100 Stranraer-Euston as this often roared as it was booked for the loco off the Euston-Stranraer vans. The move worked with 85031 producing back to Euston whilst 85026 was already on S06, the 2110 Euston-Stranraer.

After a bellow on 85026 passing Leighton I dossed out and awoke as the brakes dug in on the approach to Carlisle.

Friday Feb 21st

Carlisle was busy but seriously cold. 85026 was detached with her blowers echoing all around as she was stabled in the middle road. 26032 was chattering away “teacup” style on the Ayr vans. S19 as usual roared and 85018 took us North.

26032 idling nicely with the 0250 Carlisle – Ayr vans on February 21st 1986

At Waverly the cold again hit us with the distillery tang in the air. Our portion was confirmed as 47522 then a tea/Scotch pie combination improved spirits. After flagging off 47018 we joined 27017 on the 0615 Kircaldy. Bigger Sulzers were steaming on most other “circuit” turns so we headed for Glasgow on 47707.

The 1115 Harwich got an 87 and we were not best pleased. 87013 took us South through thick snow over Beattock. In the Kingmoor area we crossed 81004 on the 0726 Coventry-Glasgow. Dave Jackson’s quote of “perhaps another one will follow” saw much abuse but he was proved right as 81022 arrived at Carlisle with the 0747 Cardiff-Glasgow an hour later. “22 should do the 1705 Euston” was his next quote at a snowy Central. Fish 22 duly stuck to diagram.

22 screamed through the snowfields and was cleared for the thou in the Penrith area. In true Preston driver spirit 22 was failed on arrival here, we crossed to the opposite platform to join 81004 on the following 1715 Glasgow-Birmingham. At Wolves we made 85022 on the Coventry-Preston.

Saturday Feb 22nd

Saturday began with 81020 powering us North from Preston on S06 for another cold Carlisle leap. A rare trouble free run back to Euston followed on the 2030 Inverness-Euston, despite my rogue failure machine 85036 up front.

Engineering work in the Proof House Jn area saw all Euston-Birmingham’s diverted via Aston with special diagrams. We were lucky enough to get round trips behind 81003 and 85004, 81005 was also out on these turns. 310078 returned me to Leighton for a “normal” evening.

Sunday Feb 23rd

Sunday mornings were never good for roarers so all blue 86314 had to do on a Euston-Liverpool to Crewe. Things improved here with 85024 to Wolves for 81005 to Wigan on the 1620 Brum-Preston. Back at Crewe I was overjoyed as 81003 produced on the 1613 Bristol-Glas/Edin.

Much blown snow over Beattock had frozen the pipes up on arrival at Carstairs and it took well over an hour to blow torch the ice away to split the Edinburgh portion which apparently was a “large” type 2.

I hoped something would be roaring south out of Glasgow and at a deserted Central it was reassuring to join 81007 at the head of the Bristol overnight.

Monday Feb 24th

After the snowy wastes of Beattock it was a dull New St where I properly awoke. With a  “nasty nose” confirmed up front in 45136 I returned to my slumbers as the peak screamed South. T.Meads was very much Crompton city and 33035 thrashed along the Avon valley and across Salisbury Plain in style. The Pompeys were special in many ways, perhaps it was because they were nearly always right time? allowing safe plus 2 connections at Soton or Fareham. Or never too wedged as they were proper Mk I stock.

Leaps at Salisbury, Warminster and Romsey saw 4 “standards” (33’0’s) raked in before joining “bag” 117 on the 1315 Waterloo. At Salisbury recently delivered and still unnamed 59003 ghosted through on a stone train, no loco noise at all..dull!

A dull but shiny new 59003 ghosts through Salisbury on February 24th 1986

Back at Euston, the reliable 1510 Holyhead was covered but today was 86314. Wishing I’d stayed on the cromptons it was 2 hours later when I escaped home on 85032 on the second cobbler. 310’s returned me to Euston for S06 which tonight got 85025 with a diversion via Northampton to boost mileage.

“Roarer bowler” 86314 with the 1510 Euston – Holyhead which was a good bet for a “roarer” but not on February 24th 1986

Tuesday Feb 25th

Another  cold leap at Carlisle where 85015 on the up Bristol overnight was flagged for 85034 which was waiting middle road to take over from the duff on the Stranraer-Euston. Much compo doss to Watford then a 310 to Leighton for a bus to work.

310’s again back to Euston in the evening where I was apalled by 86245 on S06 and not the diagrammed 85032. Cursing my luck and everything else I joined 87018 on a Wolves for a mileage move to Watford. I rapidly got off as 81004 backed onto the stock off the 2230 Euston-Inverness “Royal Highlander”. I half expected it to be swapped for the booked 87 but it didn’t!

Wednesday Feb 26th

We were checked in the Basford Hall area and 81014 drew up on the slow line with the Bristol-Glasgow overnight.. ”Dreadfull!”. Fish 14 followed to Preston where it was the 0225 Preston-Birmingham home whatever the power, as worked beckoned again. The fish were out that night as 81007 obliged ..
