Prologue:
Before embarking on the actual moves, I feel that some background is needed. If you think any of the readership of the Lists might think the same……..if not, just ignore it!!!
The background goes back to October 1963. The 47s had made their mark on the ECML ; 34A had closed in June ; 34F had closed in September – the wiring had become visible upon the wall!!! Yet there was still a wealth of steam to be had – therefore, it will come as no surprise to anybody that, when I was making my choices of university, all 4 would have enabled me to travel on a Saturday behind steam. My choices were, in order of preference Edinburgh; King’s College, London ; York and Bangor.
On handing my completed application form to my Headmaster, he asked me to where had I applied. My reply, “Edinburgh is my first choice” elicited the response, ( and you will have to imagine the upper-class English accent!!!) “Oh! I don’t think you will get in there”. I (like Queen Victoria) was not amused. “Why not??”. I responded – to be met with “Well, my daughter was rejected”. If anything was needed to make me determined to head North of the Border…….and nothing was as you will learn in a moment.
It was all James Ness’s fault – he being General Manage of the Scottish Region in 1962. The story is well-known :-
it had been decided to introduce expresses taking 3 hours Glasgow Buchanan
Street-Aberdeen.
it had been decided that these would be steam-powered!
Ness was given the option of “Coronation” Pacifics from the WCML or A4
Pacifics from the ECML
he made the right choice!!
therefore I needed to be based in Scotland!!
Come the day of my leaving school – the ceremonial ‘paw-shake” from the Head.
“And where are you going, Burton?”. The triumphant response “I’m going to Edinburgh”. If looks could have killed………!!
So, it was that the start of 1965 saw me in my first year at Edinburgh, allegedly studying for an M.A. on Politics and Modern History (though an M.A. in the study of A4s and Black and Standard 5’s might have been more appropriate!!). the next question was – how was I going to take advantage of my location? My grant for the year was £288, out of which my “digs”. took approx 40%. allowing for such luxuries as books, drink, lunches etc, I reckoned I had about £1 a week spare!!
That’s why you will find so many runs between Waverley and Perth – the cost being about right and on a Saturday produced approx 140 miles behind 4 different steam locos. SX things were not quite so good – only 107 miles behind steam, the remainder Class 26 hauled!!

As you will see, am not too sure of the exact dates of some of these moves – regretfully I no longer possess the original notes!! If anybody out there can help to make thing more accurate, I would be most grateful.

The saga connected with the last entry – 54 was reported running 60 late –
it was NOT going to connect at Stirling!! I approached a group of employees –
“Don’t worry” said one of them , “I’m the guard for the 2105. Just stick with me and things will be OK. D5339 eventually staggered in – on its own!! On reaching Stirling, there was a taxi waiting for the guard and myself to Falkirk High for the “Colly”

In those days, the 10 o’clock was seen off by the Station Master at Waverley – Mr. Hay, formally dressed as Station Masters used to be for special occasions.
Once under way, even the second-class passengers were served coffee at their seats – out of real cups and with teaspoons stamped LNER!!!
