All-Lines through the Ages – CHAPTER 3 – Thanks to Jim Burton for the classic memories

THURSDAY 25/07/1963 – WEDNESDAY 31/07/1963

This was another attempt to travel 5000 miles in a week bearing in mind the lessons learned during my failure to achieve this the previous year!! One obvious improvement was to timetable the Plymouth-Glasgow (Central) through coach as early as possible!!

DAY 1 – NEWARK NORTHGATE-KING’S CROSS : PADDINGTON-PLYMOUTH

                   NORTH ROAD ; PLYMOUTH NORTH ROAD – CREWE

1B04 has changed from 9 vehicles throughout from Northgate to a 3 coach portion attached to the 0815 Grantham – KX.  A Grantham B1 was rostered – this morning 61392, but the new order since 1962 was apparent  – up from Grantham behind D1531 (41A), which given the standard signal checks in from Finsbury Park, did well to put us into the Cross a mere 4 minutes behind schedule as 9.54 a.m.  I wonder if, in these privatised days, one would be confident of making the 10.30 a.m. departure ex-Paddington 36 minutes after arrival in KX????. I certainly was – London Underground worked perfectly and the  reward on 1C45 being Class 43 D851 TEMERAIRE (84A).  After baling at Plymouth,where we arrived 2 minutes late, it was thence to Scotland via Wales (!!!) with the through coach from Plymouth (North Road) – Glasgow Central (part of 1M99 4.00 p .m. Manchester (Piccadilly).  My first steam/diesel combination took me over the South Devon banks to Newton Abbot – 7022 HEREFORD CASTLE (84A)  with D826 JUPITER (83A). Having detached the Castle, D826 continued to Temple Meads, being relieved by D829 MAGPIE (83A) for the stage onwards to Crewe.  We were then attached to the rear of 1S24 2110     Euston – Glasgow (Central) -D369 (1B) being in charge.

              EDINBURGH WAVERLEY ; EDINBURGH WAVERLEY-KING’S

              CROSS ; PADDINGTON-BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET :

              BIRMINGHAM NEW STREET-YORK

Highlight of the early morning was the sight of 72006 CLAN MACKENZIE and 72009 CLAN STEWART on Kingmoor. A 11 minute late arrival into Central, not too bad for the WCML!!  Thence a brisk walk to Queen Street for the 8.00 a,m. to Waverley with the expected 6.car Inter-City DMU, which gave a splendid performance, arriving 3 minutes early.  The 10.00 a.m. “Flying Scotsman” took me south to KX – D9003 MELD (34G) in usual form – a solid run to Newcastle in 113 minutes  37 seconds (schedule 115) with PWS to 32 mph after Grantshouse and a signal check to 5 mph before Heaton – then a totally disappointing run to KX 251 minutes 05 seconds with an arrival 9 minutes late!!…mind you not much of this could be booked against the locomotive

                   5 PWS ;-

        lengthy *40 before and after Chester-le-Street

        *15 at Relly Mill Junction

        *10 over Bawtry Viaduct

        *33 after Peascliffe Tunnel

        *33 after Hornsey

                   +2 signal checks to 5 mph

           Arlesey and Gasworks Tunnel

did not exactly help the cause of timekeeping!!

BUT, this was not so depressing for, on St. Margaret’s depot was 60057 ORMONDE (64A) – my last Eastern Pacific for sight. – a mere 3 moths or so, before being withdrawn !!!  I’m sure we all know the feeling when seeing, or being hauled by, something which has eluded us for years – 60057 had eluded me for some 2 years!!!  One of those happenings which make us realise why we have our obsession!!.  However, one hour lafter arrival at KX,  I was leaving Paddington behind D1065 WESTERN CONSORT (81A) on 1M16 bound for New Street – no not the present monstrosity, where we arrived 5 down.  Feeling a tad lost away from the ECML, I then headed to York. behind D12 (17A) on 1N46 1740. ex-Temple Meads ( a 4 minute late arrival.).

DAY 3 :-  YORK-NEWCASTL:E ; NEWCASTLE-EDINBURGH WAVERLEY) ;

                EDINBURGH WAVERLEY-INVERNESS and return ; EDINBURGH

                                             WAVERLEY-CARLISL:E

Following sustenance in York’s all-night buffet, to Newcastle with 1A66 8.20 p.m. KX-Edinburgh (Waverley) behind D9007 PINZA (34G) which managed to cut a 12 minute deficit leaving York to 6 minutes arriving at Newcastle.  Even better was to follow – the first of my many runs behind D9000 ROYAL SCOTS GREY on 1A72 10.30 p.m. KX-Edinburgh (Waverley)/Dundee. – wedged to the doors it was.  I finished up standing in a vestibule end – twas worth it though, if only for the sunrise over the sea as we howled up the incline north of Berwick. mind you, the performance could have been better – 9 late ex-Newcastle ; 7 late into Waverley  After a stroll along Princes Street – a pleasant experience at that time of the morning and breakfast, the next train was the 9.20 a.m. to Inverness – joy – it was steam-hauled to Perth – 60160 AULD REEKIE (64B). Having joined with the Glasgow portion, we headed north from Perth behind a mixed 24/26 combination – D5115 (60A) leading D5339 (60A) for some reason, which escapes the memory after all these years we were 22 late into Inverness. The same pair worked south 0n the 3.55 p.m. though unfortunately they worked through to Waverley, where they arrived 3 minutes ahead of schedule.  Perth produced, not only another required for sight Clan, 72008 CLAN MacLEOD (12A), but also the condemned two Western tanks 1646 and 1649, which had ended their days as the power on the Dornoch branch, following the withdrawal of 55051 and 55053. A change of route ex-Edinburgh Waverley to London followed – 1M82 10.05 p.m. to St.Pancras behind D96 (17A) to Leeds (City).

              and return ; MANCHESTER LONDON ROAD-SHEFFIELD VICTORIA ; –

              SHEFFIELD VICTORIA-KING’S CROSS ; KING’S CROSS-NEWCASTLE

After some 12 hours…….1A53 8.20 p.m. Newcastle-KX produced D9011 THE ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS (52A), which then proceeded to change a 7 minute late departure into a 4 minute early arrival into KX. A stroll acrosss the road to St.Pancras for 1H10 4.25 a.m. to Manchester (Central) with an interesting Class 45/46 combination as far as Leicester (London Road) – D134 (17A) piloting D151 (17A) – . the 46 continuing to Manchester where we were 3 minutes early. A visit to a friend in Oldham, courtesy of the 9.55 a.m. Manchester (Victoria)-Rochdale (a 2-car Cravens and return on an unrecorded bus!!  Manchester (London Road) was achieved in time to catch 1E08 2.10 p.m. to Sheffield (Victoria) behind Class “77” 27003 DIANA (Reddish) – a 2 minute early arrival… Return to KX was courtesy of 1B21 3.20 p.m. SX ex-Sheffield (Vic) behind D6815 (41A) – 2 minutes late on schedule..

 A couple of memorable stories come to mind……on my arrival at the Pullman, the  steward , having eyed me with a certain amount of distaste, asked  “Where are you going, sir” – “King’s Cross” I replied. The response “Are you sure, sir?” indicated that my appearance was not in keeping with the usual clientele.

On taking my seat at one of the tables for two, I observed that the opposite passenger was obviously of a different social class!!  We got off to a bad start when putting my haversack onto the luggage rack, I knocked his bowler hat onto the floor.  Matters were not helped when it came to the service of afternoon tea.. As I withdrew from said haversack, a  half-eaten cheese roll, he took to muttering darkly and disappeared behind his copy of the “Financial Times” for most of the rest of the journey.

The next move was back to Scotland – Aberdeen, to be precise, on 1A58 7.30 p.m. KX-Aberdeen/Fort William with D9007 PINZA (34G) in charge of the usual 14 coco rake, 504 tare to York where the Restaurant Car was detached.. There follows an overview of performance to York :-

D9007 having been replaced by a required Haymarket Class 40 D263 north of Edinburgh with arrival In Aberdeen at 6.31 a.m. (3 early) in plenty of time for 14  7.10 a.m. to Buchanan Street behind required A4 60004 WILLIAM WHITELAW (61B). Unfortunately I don’t remember much of the next 3 hours!!!  Suffice it to say that arrival in Glasgow was spot on time. A short break in Glasgow before taking 2M50 12.00 noon to Carlisle from Glasgow (St.Enoch) with 44899 (12A) – a 2 minute late arrival this time.  My train to Euston was 1M35 1.30 p.m. ex-Glasgow (Central) – the “Mid-day Scot”.  This proved to be a somewhat harrowing experience behind another required Class 40 D302 (5A). We eventually staggered into Euston some 51 minutes late at 9.46 p.m. , and I was supposed to be catching the 10.30 p.m. ex-Paddington!!!  Would I make it???  Was it worth even bothering???  A coin  was spun to decide – perhaps fortunately in came down the right way.  The Underground, which required a change of lines (!!) did me proud, yet again – my arrival at Paddington platform being approx. 10.25 p.m.!!!

DAY 7 :-  BRISTOL TEMPLE MEADS-PLYMOUTH NORTH ROAD ; PLYMOUTH

                NORTH ROAD- SALISBURY ; SALISBURY-WATERLOO ; WATERLOO-

               THE BANK ; LIVERPOOL STREET-NORWICH THORPE and return  ;

                KING’S CROSS-NEWARK NORTHGATE:

Having safely caught the 10.30 p.m. (!!) I settled down for a long overnight to

Plymouth (North Road) via Bristol (Temple Meads) behind Class 42 D813 DIADEM (84A) which managed a 4 minute early arrival.  The journey back to London began with a Class 23 D6320 (84A) on the unlikely 6.00 a.m. Plymouth (North Road0-Salisbury stopping about everywhere it was possible to stop at!!  IIf memory serves, the journey consumed nigh on 6 hours!!!  At Exeter (Central) we changed locomotives to the much more acceptable 34069 HAWKINGE (72A). We arrived in Salisbury at 11 .50 a.m – 2 minutes ahead of schedule on what must have been one of the slowest schedule of a main-line service in the country!!  Out of Salisbury on the 8.10 a.m. ilfracombe/8.10 a.m. Torrington/8.25 a.m. Plymouth (Friary)-Waterloo behind another required Battle of Britain light Pacific – 34109 SIR TRAFFORD LEIGH-MALLORY (72A) – drop of 10 minutes due entirely to signals at the London end!!, thence by the Waterloo & City line to the Bank and a quick trot to Liverpool Street saw me on the  3.30 p.m. to Norwich (Thorpe).  Motive power was provided by Class 37 D6706 ((30A) – timekeeping exemplary. A mere 10 minutes – time enough for a cross-platform connection and I was back on the 5.40 p.m. to Liverpool Street, this time behind D6712 (30A). My ticket was checked by a friendly West Indian “gripper”.  I explained what I had been doing, that Ithe aim was  to achieve 5000 miles in a week, and that this depended on my catching 1A66 out of KX.  With a broad smile he answered me , “I think you should just about make it”!  And so I did, though with a momentary anxiety caused buy an 8 minute late arrival, following a last thrash on the Circle Line..  The journey home being with D9015 TULYAR (34G) which gave me an “on time” arrival to finish with!!

POSTSCRIPT TO ALL THIS!!

On my return, my father expressed the opinion that we should contact the local paper “The Newark Advertiser” to see if they wanted a wee news story.  This was duly done and in the next edition my journeys were deemed worthy of a short paragraph or two.  Shortly after then, my father received a phone call at work from the BBC asking whether I could be in Birmingham by 4.00 p.m. hat afternoon.  On being told that this was impossible – my parents not possessing a car, he was told that they would send a car for me!! So I was taken to Birmingham and interviewed for the regional news.  Somewhere I think I still possess my contract (!! )- my payment was the sum of 4 guineas (quite a sizeable amount of money in this far-off days!!)
