Thanks to Jim Burton for these epic notes from 61 years ago now!
Oh for those younger, fitter days when we did ridiculous things without really thinking!! My major trip in the summer of 1964 lasted from 10.35 a.m. on Friday August 7 until 5.37 a.m. on Sunday August 9 – during which time I had journeyed from Newark (Northgate) to Glasgow (Buchanan Street)) and back via Aberdeen!! The theory was – travel Deltic hauled from Doncaster to Waverley then 40 to Aberdeen for A4 haulage to Buchanan Street, back to Aberdeen behind steam, 40 to Waverley and thence “pot luck” back to Northgate. Here follows the story of that weekend as always not following the theory throughout!!
Even the start was somewhat different. I had been invited by the Station Master at Retford, name of McLean (who had recently transferred for Newark – Retford being seen as a step upwards in these days!!), to view the works at Retford, leading to the abolition of the flat crossing between the ECML and the Lincoln (Central)-Shefffield (Victoria)l Line.
So, to 1D25 with its customary Class 47 – actually there was not a lot of choice at to motive power at Northgate during the daylight hours, unless one was fortunate enough to drop onto a Class 40 standing in.
Friday August 7th 1964
I spent two hours at Retford not only viewing the engineering works but also keeping a weather eye on the succession of “Deltic” hauled expresses – nothing wrong with Class 55 availability that morning!!

The relative infrequency of service to the intermediate stations on the ECML can be judged from the fact that 1N10 was the first service since 1D25 to serve them. The Class 55 was as booked and not likely to be troubled by the schedule on to Doncaster.

Hope you will agree that this performance log is worthy of inclusion in full! Remember that this was 1964, with lower speed limits and still a limitation over Wiske Moor troughs!! Even the signalling system worked for us by giving D9005 an unchecked run into Darlington!! (very much rarity in those days – I think it was called a “controlled approach!!) OK, I know that compared to 60 years later……but this was perhaps the first real taste I had of just what Class 55s were capable of.

The original intention had been to await 1S46 at Darlington, but how could I resist the sight of a Gresley Pacific (especially in 1964??!!
Now I know this looks like an awful performance from a clapped out steam locomotive and there is, perhaps, a degree of truth here – after all, 60071 was condemned (according to Yeadons Register) on October 12 ,1964!! But, by 1964, there were other reasons as well! Some crews, expecting to find the relative comfort of a diesel cab were not exactly amused to find a steam locomotive awaiting them!! Furthermore, in this particular case the train was timed for a Class 45 with a timing load of 385 tons (11 vehicles – so an A3 loading 12 was always bound to struggle a bit!!) – so whether 1N84 was booked to change motive power at York, or whether 60071 was covering a failure I know not

ABERDONIAN
The first alarming event was 1S02 and its arrival at Ncle class 24 hauled!! Now presumably this occurrence was due to a locomotive failure before departure from York , or very shortly afterwards!!
The second was the arrival of 1S03 behind 60963 – I could not have turned down another steam-hauled run.On the other hand did I want suffer another change of trains at Waverley at 2.48 a.m. ?? I remember still the mixture of disappointment couple with relief when D280 took over!!!
Back to “Plan A” – 1A58 to Waverley – again so much for theory!!! 1A58 was wedged – not wanting to stand at the very least for 124 odd miles, there was nothing for it but “Plan C” 1A60 with its expected 47!! There was room for a doss in peace and quiet!!!

I was awakened some 4 hours later by, what appeared to be an attempt to blow the roof off Camperdown Tunnel!! Not even a Haymarket 40 could produce that racket – a somewhat bleary-eyed view espied a grimy, unkempt V2, which presumably had taken over at Waverley. Despite the hour, it was time to go to the wrist watch!!!!

Now, the question is…..was loco change at Pth booked or was 73150 in trouble either seems possible. Caprotti valve gear locomotives had a unenviable reputation on banks, but 28 mph minimum at Kinbuck and a passing time at Gleaneagles of 25 mins 03 secs was a tad grisly!!
