Leighton Buzzard log June 21st 1973

Leighton Buzzard log June 21st 1973

Thursday June 21st 1973 saw a 2 hour rush hour session (1740-1945) spotting at Leighton Buzzard station. 40 loco hauled services were viewed, 33 of which were passenger. In these days of mainly Pre-TOPS numbers class 86’s (cans) dominated the power with 31 different “cans” viewed out of 40 different locos! This helps to explain our dislike of the “cans” right through to the mid 90’s as they did everything! By 1974 the class 87’s arrived on the WCML and the power variety improved.

Operational/Preserved 86101 LSL, Crewe….1

I think its fair to say that the currently stored 86’6s will also go for scrap but 86639 was operationally locally in Jan 2021, a true survivor.  86101 will probably do a few tours but LSL seem to love their 90’s to date. So Hungary is the place to go to see 6 of the 40 locos seen back in 1973

Phot Spot

The true survivor 2 days before going into store 86608 and 86639 (seen as E3153 on the Manchester Pullman on 120673) passes a soggy Old Linslade with 4M87 Felixstowe – Trafford Pk liners on January 20th 2021

86101 is still operational and back on December 11th 1982 she is seen passing engineering work with a long rake of early Mk II’s in tow as the clear up from 81016’s fatal crash here a few days earlier continued.

25311 as 7661 was on cement duties back in June 73 and again on March 9th 1983 she is seen here with 25289 up front at Leighton Buzzard with cement empties from Kings X Goods to Tring (via Bletchley)

85032 locally known as “Patch” is seen at Bletchley with 1B09 “Cobbler” on April 24th 1984, Back in June she was  aso on class 1 duties

Mark Beal’s rare image of Floyd (Hungary) liveried 86217 (now Floyd numbered 450 006-6) bound for Hungary passing Northampton with 47786 powering 0Z87 Long Marston – Wembley on October 26th 2012
