Believe this was the first weekend of the Cambrian Season 1984 and would prove the last with class 25’s. The first Cambrian servce that day was a series 1 and 3 pairing, this was frowned upon as the problem of the locos fighting each other when working in multiple. 25037 and 25315 however performed admirably. The 1010 ex Euston was not a brilliant pair so i opted for the Caersws bail. 47 power on the 1637 ex Shrewsbury didnt appeal so i opted for the bus stop move to Church Stretton and back clawing in 33058, the only time i ever had it. A DMU and the 966 bus got me home happy………..

Looking back this was a pretty dull day bashing wise. The rats were all dud, so courtesy of Smudger Smith’s (aka the Buzzard) gensheet i picked up 4 winners, 20216, 20227, 37236 and 47213. A decent overnight for “roarers” to Crewe and it was good to have the big pair 37236/37177 New St – Wolves. Although dud, 37177 from my late 70’s Swansea days was a bit of a legend for working coal, parcels but few passenger turns…

My winners were 25076, 25064, 20227, 20216, 31327 and 31246.
The intention had been to spend the day on the 25’s until I came across Smudger on the 0735 Aber who spilled the beans about the loanee bombs on the Skeg. So I bailed at Wellington and tore up the script as I didn’t want to miss the 20’s before they returned to Scotland. Now I look back and think was it a good move sacrificing 25245 as I didn’t envisage 20227 becoming EH and common as anything since.
There were a few bowl outs on this day notably 37293 on the 1015 Bristol to Pad relief. This snout became a thorn in my side and became my last one and it took 13 more years before I got it one week before Diana was killed.
A bowl out for the 40 crowd on the Skeg to Manchester as it was 31291 apparently. It wasn’t the only Skeg calamity with 47156 on the Derby rather than bombs which personally offended me.
It says on railgen that 45005 worked Edinburgh to York and back. I guess being the start of a new summer timetable some of the allocations went wonky. I would not have gone home had I known 40152, albeit dud, was allocated to drag the 2100 Euston to Inverness from Stafford. I would have stayed on 31246 to New St to attack the whistler.
Incidentally 31246 had worked to Norwich with 31189 but only 246 came back. I nearly missed this winner by making the minus 4 onto 31255 for a Narborough fill in move and was close to getting withered by late running.

I’m pretty sure I was on the 0647 EMU LB-New St, as that was the standard move to Brum, but I wasn’t in the habit of recording DMU’s, EMU’s or HST’s at that point, schoolboy error (literally!), so I have no idea how I got home. I’m guessing possibly HST back to New St, & EMU home, or EMU Tamworth-Rug & EMU Rug-LB. Outside chance that I did HST Tamworth-Derby, HST Derby-Bedford, & back to LB, via the branch, but who knows? Lost in the mists of time I’m afraid. No photos either, sorry.
I can still remember a grubby and obviously not long for this world 46047 disappearing off into a hazy early summer evening at Tamworth, it wasn’t wet at that point.
Well gents, how I got home that day is becoming a bit of a mystery. I’ve had a look in my 84-5 timetable, and unless I’m missing something, I’d have had an hour long fester at Tamworth, for a cart back to New St. Assuming I did that, I’d have been in New St at 1750. The logical way home would then have been the 1818 New St-Euston, but I’d have a record of the loco if I did that.
Going the other way, I could have gone on to DY for a tram to Bedford and home via the branch, but why didn’t I stay on 047 to DY? I definitely didn’t, I clearly remember standing next to it at Tamworth, and watching it pull out.
The only other way is via the WCML, but the only train I can find is an EMU that terminates at Nuneaton

Many thanks to all the contributors to our May 26th 1984 moves page. Some good stuff out. Now weather it was raining a lot or whatever it appears that only two of us took any phots of the day, which is unusual
The Phot (ta to DS)

25037 and 25315 at Aberysytwyth on May 26th 1984 with the 0744 from Shrewsbury. The “rats” will run round the stock here to form 1A46 1010 Aberystwyth – Euston. A Dave Spencer phot recvd with thanks

20227 and 20216 having run round the ECS of the Skegness – Leicester, a Mike Lewis photo recd with thanks

Mike Lewis captures 31246 at Nuneaton ith the 1559 Yarmouth- Birmingham. Look at the extensive engineers sidings and old goods shed behind the 31 too
Tony Marsden has a nice phot of 37236 and 37177 at Wolves that day too
