From memory the short lived NSE rover was valid on all operators across the NSE Network although possibly not West of Salisbury. It cost £63-50 for 7 consecutive days but wasnt valid before 0930 Monday – Friday

Leighton Station bus stop was an unusual starting venue, A National soon had us thrashing up Wing Hill to Aylesbury, then High Wycombe for a VR to Reading arriving here 2.5 hours after leaving Leighton!
207010 was soon thumping across the levels to Basingstoke. At Salisbury 50030 was in the loco siding with a “not to moved” totem. Returning East behind 33102 a surprise when we crossed 33109 on a load 2 thumper substitute.

“not to be moved” after failing, 50030 in Salisbury loco siding on January 13th 1992
Later in the afternoon Paddington had a hood choice of 47 hauled Mk I commuter trains. I opted for the 1738 Paddington – Banbury as it was the sole surviving booked hauled turn via High Wycombe. 47587 put in a good attack on the climb up Saunderton bank, whilst just a single spotter watched the action at Princes Risborough.
Shiny new 165012/019 impressed less on the following Aylesbury bound service.

Chinging out for a single to Northampton saw 321424 to Bletchley for the sole surviving local class 310 diagram in 310107 forward. Bus moves from Northampton to Bedford and Biggleswade for an ex Bletchley beast in 317332 to Stevenage for 91013 forward to the Cross.

The same slow bus move to Reading then much 47’7 power on the Waterloo – Exeters then much 47’4 power on the Padd – Oxfords. Former Stratford 47583 put in a superb run on 12 lightly loaded Mk I’s on the 1839 Banbury – Padd. A can home via the Keynes again.

The NSE Rover today took me just to Northampton for a Midline Day Ranger forward. Issues on the Weedon route saw all down traffic diverted via Northampton. The cause of the Weedon blockage was seen as we waited at Rugby with a tatty 47238 dragging a dead tram making an unscheduled stop. A short trip behind the former Canton xos machine to Nuneaton followed during which harassed BR staff were using the buffet radio phone to advise Irish residents of their visitor’s missed ferry connections.
Moves sampling both diesel and electric units with a particulary lively run on 304030 from Stafford to Rugby on the “Trent Valley Flyer”.

After enduring a 2 hour plus bus ride via Aylesbury and Oxford, I arrived at the station on a local bus only to see the withering sight of Dutch, very nb, very required 47364 leaving with the 1000 Oxford – Padd. An hour’s wait followed for the dull, by comparison, 47587 on the 1100 Padd.
That evening i got a front coach compo seat on the 1650 Banbury with 47431 up front. With many familiar bashing faces hovering but not boarding, I eventually got off to cover the very last loco hauled Padd – Banbury via Wycombe service. The hoverers had the gen, as power was 47364! The regular commuters were joking re the lack of heat, but were less pleased at the number of cranks on “their” train. Approaching High Wycombe an office girl pulled out her “goodbye dear old train” banner to ahhhhs all round.
I bailed at Princes Risborough where there was just time to view the quality “Chiltern loco hauled finale” headboard. The local spotter here seen earlier in the week appreciated the rarity value of 47364 less, he was hoping for some 50!
From Aylesbury an ageing, smoking 6 car DMU formation than the bus home, 2 passengers who joined y coach quickly changed caches fearing death by fumes! 87021 on the Euston – Liverpool back to the Keynes was a world apart…

Stonebridge Park (Sudbury) loco sidings have seen a great variety of stabled power over the years but today was a personal first with Clayton 8568 stabled there. Later my Crompton mileage increased with drab grey 33109 on the 1115 Waterloo – Exeter for 33102 on a Salisbury – Basingstoke 2 coach thumper substitute back. 50030 had been battered to be the only one out on Waterloo – Exeter’s that day, whilst i went ED bashing to Gatwick
