Awaiting the unit at Leighton my hopes were raised on seeing a 47 dragging a unit come round the corner. 47294 was however was not dragging our 310 but an Eastern 305 unit 449 en route from Ilford to Wolverton. The 310 followed behind for the usual lively power car coach ride to Rugby. A “can” to a damp Nuneaton where 25090 was on a Hartshill ballast job. A DMU to Leicester where positioned at the North end of the up platform i was shocked on seeing a”rat” and “peak” arrive on a Nottingham service.
A frantic run and footbridge charge saw the duo just made and time to enjoy a hard working 25313 and half working 45128 all the way to Nottingham. The 25 had been added at Bedford i was later told but any hopes she would pilot the return working were dashed when 45126 lumbered into Nottingham to work 1C49.
31126 obliged on the 0949 Norwich – Brum from Leicester our progress a lot more subdued than the lively 25313 run earlier. At New St 87018 took me to Int’l to cover the 1105 Portsmouth – Manchester which often produced a big “nb” off a liners but today was a dull boilered 47178. 31204 on the 1508 Birmingham – Cambridge was a required newie as was 40158 unfortunately on freight at Nuneaton! A DMU back to Ne St where a decent “nb” in 47342 produced on the 1520 Liverpool – Poole. Following the 47 from Banbury was “bubble” 55021 on an Oxford local. 47471 to Leamington, then a late running 47264 on the 1705 Poole – Derby made my connection at Coventry looking dodgy. 47264 went well but the 310 was in as we arrived at Coventry, a second mad footbridge dash saw the unit home made, but as the proper railway of the time normally operated, the unit had been held for the 10 connecting passengers (10) anyway.

Saturday August 14th
I was down the station for 0515 hoping to catch the famous loco hauled 2A23 “Milk empties” to Bletchley but Railman Jock advised it had gone 10 minutes ago. Still on seeing an 86 at Bletchley on 2A23 empties i returned to my slumbers in the warm, comfy 310 cushions. 86235 forward from Coventry to Wolves where a tasty Eastern 47291 was raked in on the Wolves-Pompey. Back at Wolves, chattering away nicely 25190 and 25207 were joined for the thrash to Salop on the 0740 Aber.
Rather than do the normal Welshpool move i opted to stay at Shrewsbury with 47125 passing non stop on 1V83 1020 Liverpool – Paignton, one of a very few SO holiday trains booked via the Marches.
Front coach compos were bagged for the sounds emitted from 25269 and 25277 on the long climb out of Shrewsbury to Wolves, “hell fire” it was too! Some can forward to New St before Canton MGR machine 47231 was a welcome beast on 1E23 0908 Tenby – York.
20041 and 20141 were raked in from Long Eaton on the Skeg-Derby along with half the bashing world, less were on 47326 back to Beeston but a good few were on 31290/31233 on the 1338 Yarmouth – Birmingham. Awaiting the 1608 Llandundo – Euston home at Nuneaton i couldnt resist joining the TV local in front with 303050 the power. My smugness at having a “Glasgow unit” into Rugby was wiped, when the rare 83005 overtook us on the Llandudno – Euston!
A 310 home from Rugby ended 2 entertaining days with a good few type 2’s in the book!
