Something different today we mused as we headed North on the first Euston – Birmingham service of the day with 321422 providing the power.
Pathfinder had organised 4 rakes of stock to be used with exotic power on the Birmingham – Gloucester – Bristol circuit in an event similar to Hertfordshire’s diesel day between Leicester and St Pancras in May 89.
The following featured on the Pathfinder Shuttles.
20025 and 20096, 20084 and 20170, 37074 and 37100, 37691 and 37800, 56034 and 58004..10 locos!
There was also a Hertfordshire Tour “the Double Gloucester” from Padd bringing 37235 and 37131 to Gloucester and onwards to Sharpness.
There was also a large 33 loco Open day at Gloucester Horton Road depot plus frequent shuttles from Gloucester’s busy station to Barnwood Jn top and tailed by steamer 6024 and 08795 with the Chocolate and Cream 117 DMU set composed of 51368/59520/51410.
Something for eveybody!
The Open Day exhibits included..(thanks to John Williams)

Green 37350 and 37220 looking good at the Rail Day
John Williams remembers….”Also, at that time APTIS platform tickets were hard to come by from Gloucester, so I had the third degree from the booking office staff there when I asked them to print some from the blanks that I produced from my wallet.!!!
“TC’s” memories and moves from the day
Sunday 1st July 1990 was a decent day, We used the car to get to/from Birmingham, making the 37’s off there at 08.38, finishing on 58004 on the 21.28 from Bristol. From memory it seemed to run very well and to time. The only incident (and it could have been a lot worse) was on 58004 coming back up in the evening. We were cautioned because of a fatality on the Lickey, and passed the site with the body still at the side of the track along with the emergency services. It was announced not to look out a particular side of the train and of course everybody did! We were something like 40 late back into Birmingham, these days that would be a lot worse.
7 winners, 20084+20170 also out but both dud so didn’t bother.

As we travelled home from New St to Cov and then the unit via Northampton there was news from the Italia 90 World Cup quarter final in Naples. Cameroon were 2 -1 up against England as we left Coventry, by Northampton it was extra time, and on getting home England had won 3-2.
An excellent day out none the less though!!
