Pitstone log, Thurs March 3rd 1977 pm

An interesting afternoon at Pitstone at the North end of Tring Cutting on the WCML.

Class 81-5 were on parcels and freight only, a solitary 25 represented diesel  traction on the Kings X  Yd-Tring cement empties. very much a proper electric WCML back then. Freight was grouped in down blocks. 86228 was the first loco to return North at 1610 after heading South at 1349. 310 unit moves are excluded.

Of the 45 locos seen in 1977, in May 2014 just 86009 (as 609) and 86012 (as 612) remain in regular service with Freightliner, perhaps showing the “cans” strong link with the real WCML of the 70’s. Several other “cans” and “sevens” remain active in Eastern Europe too.

Linking with a real railway of 37 years earlier, 86609 seen back on 030377 and 86627 take 4M54 Tilbury – Crewe liners north through Old Linslade on 060514.
