Reliefs out of Padd, December 1982

Thursday December 23rd 1982

My train South from Leighton was 1A83 0813 Northampton – Euston the last “morning Cobbler” . This train on which back then cheap day returns were valid was notoriously unreliable in terms of power. Sometimes an 86’2, often an 86’3 but equally often a class 81-85 “roarer”. Well today my luck held with 85027 producing. This was my only my only ever run behind 85027 as she caught fire on a liners at Kings Langley a few months later and never worked again, being cut in March 85.

Once aboard the “Cobbler’s” rear Mk I (to avoid the commuter wedge) i sat back to enjoy the journey with my 248 page! Christmas and New Year 1982/83 Supplement as light reading. A large number of relief trains were listed out of Kings Cross, Euston and Paddington for the Christmas rush of passengers heading away from London for the Christmas break. Today I planned to cover the Paddington reliefs hoping for some steam heat 47and perhaps class 31 action out of Padd.

Well after doing required 50041 on an Oxford to Reading i was shocked to see 45017 arriving on the 0815 Penzance – Padd relief. This had to be done! After a short fester at Padd 50015 returned me to Reading overtaking a required 47562 on a Padd – Oxford which i did forward from Reading. More newies albeit eh with 47567 on the Newcastle – Poole to Reading for 47508 on the 1625 ex Oxford back to Padd.

Back at Euston 1B09 the last evening Cobbler produced 85038 and front coach seats allowed the usual howls, screams and pops that 85038 delivered to be enjoyed!
