Scottish moves August 1 and 2 1983
Monday August 1st 1983
85040 sped me and many others on a very wedged 1S06 North through the night. When I awoke at Mossend the 2 passengers opposite asked me where we were. On replying Glasgow, they went into a flap. They had hoped to be arriving in Stranraer, but only their bikes in the Stranraer portions van were!
Still they raked in 26010 for haulage into Glasgow Queen St before bailing. More doss on the West Highland slog behind 37108 and 37192, despite being booked for a 20 pilot on Mondays, a pair of 37s was rateable enough. The Tyndrum Upper bail saw “Smudger Smith” of Cornish fame produce. He joined the other 20 or so bashers on the cafe move at Tyndrum. Now being only a plus 50 most bashers opted for a coffee and a roll, Smudger Smith opting for the full breakfast.
Smudger with orange jacket flailing was viewed on the long path from the main road as 37051 left Tyndrum Lower, bowled big time. Later he advised he went back to the cafe for a second breakfast!, before joining the Fort Bill train some 3 hours later!
Later 37039 returned me to Glasgow, then Edinburgh where 27208 dragging a DMU on a Shotts service was the only major interest. 26031 produced on a Dundee-Glasgow before 47469 took me North on the “internal overnight”.

Tuesday August 2nd 1983
On arrival at Inverness it was straight onto 47013 for the Elgin leap. 27051 was tucked away here in the good’s yard “platform” with the stock to form the 0712 Elgin – Inverness. The guard had herded all the bashers off the inbound non advertised Aberdeen – Elgin service into the rear bays, so i got the front table!
Inverness had a type 4 shortage so the 0848 and 1048 Aberdeen’s got 26034/040 and 26030/043 respectively. The second pair was flagged for required 37025 on the Wick which took me to Dingwall for a pint in the “Shunter’s bar” adjoining the station.
After a daytime Highland main line run, the famous 2L50 1710 Perth – Arbroath was joined which tonight was load 2 though often it was just load 1. 26032 arrived light engine from Dundee to work the train in style. A Cupar bail later in the evening saw me join a fairly quiet overnight South to Peterborough.
