The full logs of the day
It began early on 2Y01 0609 Hamilton West-Waverley with formed of Classes 116/115 High-Density units. On arrival, in order to pass the time until the departure of 1Z38 0915 New Street due to run independently of the Glasgow portion, the decision was made to take 1O10 to Falkirk High and cover the 0810 Queen Street-Scarborough Central, booked for a Class 37, on a +5 minutes connection.

So far, so good – the arrival of the Scarborough was confidently expected. The minutes ticked by – still no sign!!! All of a sudden word came – delay to the stock working into Queen Street – some 30 late departure!! Fortunately there was a fall-back – 1O09 the push-pull back to Haymarket – this time on a +4 minute connection-
pity that we were 6 late off Falkirk, but with judicious use of the recovery time, things should be OK.

Apologies for quality but it was dark and was 40034 “Accra’s” last passenger working at York on December 17th 1983. She had replaced 40028 at New St on the returning epic “Christmas Cracker” railtour. 40034 was sadly withdrawn on Jan 8th 1984 and cut soon afterwards

Not the greatest run I ever experienced with a Class 40 but I suppose that with 10/348 on it was not too bad. Anyhow, considering that 40034 was required, I was hardly complaining!!! The 81 was comfortably in control – the run obviously spoilt by the concluding signal stop – not unknown outside Carlisle!!

The magic of bashing! You were hoping for a “roarer” and not only does it produce, but its an 81 still with domino headcode. All happened at Wolves on December 3rd 1983 with 81019 on the 1120 Liverpool – Birmingham NS
I had assumed that I would be at Carlisle till the 0950 SO ex-New Street put in an appearance…….so much for planning……..40092, another required 40 was waiting to take over on 1S49 which, in those days, was routed by the G&SW! So, thinking that 1S67 was not on……..and with 1M03 to come back on ex-Annan………

OK, so the load was a featherweight, but I draw your attention to ‘even time” before
Gretna Green!!! The day was getting better and better – one of those days when somebody was on your side!!! There seemed to be an awful lot of passengers on the down platform – a quick glance at the board in the crew room……1S67 was 22 minutes late!!! Some moments later 81009 (my second required roarer of the day!!) arrived, and I was on my way back to Haymarket, with the aim of catching 1A38, which rumour had it was booked for a required 40!! not, only that but reports gave indication of another rare (for Scotland!!) 40 having worked out on the morning Inverness. The day was becoming epic!!

Apologies for quality but this is a rare working for 40084. She is running round the 0840 Halifax – Kings X portion at Wakefield Kirkgate. At Wakefield Westgate the 40 would reverse the portion onto the rear of a Leeds – Kings X service on June 22nd 1977. The next day the more usual 31417 was on this portion working, yawn! All 2 years before Jim had 40084!

OK, so Class 47s were not my favoured form of motive power, but the extra 580 hp came in useful!! Now, the wait for 1G19 proved longer than booked. Quite frankly, the class 40 was NOT the ideal locomotive to work to Inverness!!! They struggled on the banks and often acquired considerable lateness…so it proved tonight. Well worth waiting for, however……a Spring’s Branch loco…..my fourth required 40 of the day!!!!

Another Class 40 weak on the banks – 28 mph at North Queensferry was NOT exactly inspiring. Mind, the late arrival meant a welcome cut in the fester time for 2Y48 2204 Waverley-Hamilton West formed of Class 116/175 units.
Loco outcome of the day…..
Class 40 7. (4 required)
Class 27 4
Class 81 2 (2 required)
Class 47 1
It justified the cost of the “Freedom of Scotland”!!!
Thanks to Jim Burton for the epic logs and memories from July 79…
