The “South Yorkshireman” Railtour from July 84 remembered.
Pre tour moves, Sat and Sun 14 and 150784
A 5am Sunday morning tour from Cardiff meant a rancid overnight but with the prospect of a good doss once on the tour! A 1600 departure from Leighton saw Mule, then classic Crompton moves to Cardiff. The 0110 Bristol – Cardiff produced a pair but went direct via the Severn Tunnel rather than the more usual Sunday doss move via Gloucester.
A good few of us piled in the upside waiting room at Cardiff for a fairly comfortable few hours fester whilst those that went for chips on arrival at Cardiff were bowled. The barrier staff wouldnt let them back onto the platforms until 0430 so a seriously rancid fester for them outside the station with the booked antics from the Saturday night drunks to endure.

Once aboard most of us were asleep before Newport! Right up to arrival at Temple Meads there was doubt
that the requested 47901 would work the tour forward from Bristol. It was good to hear she was on the front as we left Bristol and 47901 stormed up the Lickey with the 10 x Mk IIa’s in tow. At New St dud 58014 replaced 47901 with Nuneaton flyover being included on a circuitous route to Sheffiled.
“Monsters” very much required Healy Mills 37248 and 37249 then took over for the bulk of the tour round South Yorkshire across to Cleethorpes where the 37’s ran round. Through Leeds to Huddersfield then back to Sheffiled via Healy Mills. The 58 replaced the 37’s at Sheffiled to return me to New St. I bailed here but an awful lot got on to rake in 47901 down the Lickey to Cheltenham.
To be fair I was along with agood few others, dossed for much of the tour after such a rancid overnight but the atmosphere aboard was good with decent power and route.

With all day dragging from New St to Nuneaton, an unusual 45043 was joined for the run to Nuneaton where 45042 was waiting to depart with a Brum bound drag! 86319 returned me to the Keynes for 310076 home. At Bletchley we crossed 33014 on a return Adex from the Southern to end an interesting few days.
