Thanks to Jim Burton for his interesting logs
Among the first things to strike me about my jaunts to the Southern Region over the years was the realistic nature of its schedules. Whilst not expecting mass heroics, they were well within the capacity of a loco in reasonable condition always given good operating practice!!. This resulted in most services being within the railway definition of “right time” (even if I happened to disagree with the official definition!!). Despite the incidence of suburban traffic, it always seemed easier to have an unchecked run into Waterloo from Clapham Junction than was the case from Finsbury Park into King’s Cross!!
To star the ball rolling, we have details of a 73 electro–diesel on the morning Weymouth Quay departure from Waterloo……..

For the last of Volume 1…….one of my problems, having recently achieved my 80th. birthday and having logged my first train on 1960 is that many of my memorable runs were with steam power. Over the years since I have been contributing to the Lsts, I feel I have detected a slight anti-steam bias!!! Now this is quite understandable, given the amount of twaddle spoken, and written, about steam by enthusiasts, who were not even born in 1968 and whose only contact with steam has been with the pampered beasts which have survived into preservation. It was not like that prior to 1968, I assure you!!! However, there were good runs made with steam, and I feel that this is one of the many
