Its around 0620 at a cold frosty Maidenhead station, teacher John Williams is waiting for the usual stragglers to join his 20 strong depot bash party. By 0625 the rag tag group of youngsters with their Parka’s hoods up, duffle bags slung over their shoulders were all present. At 0630 the DMU arrives and the kids pile aboard, their eagle eyes recording:

Back at Kings X there was half an hour observing the nonstop loco moves from the end of platform 8, where on joining 47470 on the 1204 to Hull there was much disappointment as several Deltics were hovering!

The following were observed en route to Peterborough through the now snow covered country under grey skies. At Peterborough 55012 was cheered at passing with the 1020 Newcastle – Kings X.

A Craven’s “bog cart” was endured across the Fens to March where the 20 minute snowy stroll, crossing the line by the level crossing, into Norwood Road where distant views of the depot’s power caused the pace to involuntary quicken. Then up Hundred Road and into the depot, once JW showed the permit, 34 locos including 2 x 20, well worth the slippy walk from March station.

In fading light and now frost and snow underfoot the trudge back to the station for a steaming 31243 to Ipswich with Mk I E25080 hosting increasingly exhausted kids! Still they recorded the following between Peterborough and Ipswich and between Ipswich and Liverpool St
