A good few of us will have leapt at Colwyn Bay over the years. Situated right by the sea some 10 miles from Rhyll and just 4 miles from the Jn this was a popular leaping spot as we chased the multitude of loco haued trains that called there.

Loco haulage on Table 83 (Aka “the Coast”) was to remain pretty solid right up to 2000 and even after that with booked Pendolino drags, the “Paupers”, the “WAG” and more kept still saw a few locos calling at Colwyn Bay. This has continued to this day with 67017 calling at Colwyn Bay at 2111 with 1W96 1722 Cardiff – Holyhead “WAG” as i write these notes on February 12th 2025.

My Colwyn leaps 1981-2000
From 1981-1982 my Colwyn Bay leaps were productive in getting 40’s in particular. By the 90’s Colwyn Bay became a holiday and day trip (from Leighton) for us and a class 31/37 hauled rake of 5 Mk I’s along the scenic Coast, for a few hours pottering about on the beach or doing the Happy Dragon buses with the kids was a good day out for all.
I must make the effort to do the “WAG” to Colwyn Bay to sample a loco hauled train calling there some 44 years after my first visit……………….
