The 1638 Waterloo – Salisbury/Yeovil Jn/Exeter remembered
From at least 1976 (when my records began) to 1980 every Friday saw a Crompton hauled 1638 Waterloo – Yeovil Jn and then from May 80 – May 82 we had a Mon-Thu 1638 Waterloo – Salisbury and Friday Only Yeovil Jn.
From May 82 the 1638 became a Mon – Fri Yeovil, A year later the 1638 was extended to Exeter. May 88 saw the 1638 cut back to Salisbury but still with “Crompton” power. The train continued into July 93 with primarily class 50 then 47 power until all loco hauled services on the Waterloo – Exeter route finally ended on July 10th 1993.

Memories are made of scenes of this, 33029 thrashes out of Andover with the 1638 Waterloo – Exeter on September 17th 1985.
The 1638 memories
Although the 1638 and it various variations saw haulage by a variety of classes incl 37, 42, 47’3, 47’4, 47’7 and not forgetting a fair few 50’s, a solitary 73 its “Cromptons” thrashing away on a load of 8 Mk I’s that will stick in the memory, big time. The train retained “Crompton” haulage when the class was less common West of Salisbury by the mid 80’s and so was a godsend in delivering solid mileage.
A good few different “Cromptons” have worked the 1638 and an initial stab has produced the following 88 different Cromptons…….Additions welcome!
