Thanks to Jim Burton for this unique gen!

Thanks to Dave Spencer for this classic Aberdeen view on February 22nd 1981 with 47412 and 40061 the star of Jim’s log awaiting departure time.
At first perusal of the attached log, the obvious question is…..why do I deem this worthy of inclusion in the Leighton Lists. It is not for the rarity of the motive power. It is not because it shows exceptional performance in the way either of times or speeds.
It is only because of my belief that it is unique!!!! I have never ever seen a log of the “Colly” in either direction covering the entire journey!! Or to put it another way, I have never known anybody apart from myself mad enough to contemplate starting a log at 2331 at Edinburgh (Waverley) and completing it at 1017 the following morning at Colchester (North)!!
At the time of this epic I was employed by British Railways (Scottish Region) in the HQ building, Buchanan House in Cowcaddens – roughly where Buchanan Street station had existed until October 1966. It was the only time I ever used my position (lowly though it was) to my advantage. Not wanting to be saddled with a Class 47, I approached my colleague who programmed Haymarket locos, and asked him if he could arrange for a Class 40 to be rostered that night.
The result – an immaculate D261 as far as March!!

Well, there we are folks – after this the “Colly” became the parcels train, which, for years, had been it ‘s main function. Yet one more loss to the realm of the overnight trains which carried passengers almost as an afterthought!!
