After a interesting day on a WM scratchcard it was all aboard the Cromptons as they ran round at Birmingham Int’l departing 2148 an hour down with the “Rhins & Machars” Crompton with Fragonset’s 33108 and 33021 powering 13 coaches. We were lucky to be in a comfortable early Mk II about 4 coaches back as we thrashed into the night!
A mini tour highlight came around 2am when 33108 and 33021 thrashed out of Dent on the S and C after a pick up beer stop here! I next stirred at Largs to enjoy some loadhaul grid thrash from 56106 on departure. Beyond Girvan i leant out for a sustained blast of grid thrash as we climbed into the wild Galloway country. This was a really atmosperhic part of the tour with the otherwise silent hills echoing the varied sounds of a hard working grid.
We were only booked at Stranraer Harbour for 5 minutes which meant photting the power wasnt easy but we were soon enjoying Crompton thrash through the Galloway wilds once again. After detaching 56106 in Falkland yard it was “Cromptons” to Glasgow Central for a welcome and needed 2 and a half hour break. The Central chippie and a few 303 moves followed

On return the Cromptons stormed down Beattock bank at impressive speeds, at Carlisle we all flailed at 55022 on another tour and then collectively withered some kettle tour at Carnforth. All too soon we were back in the Mdands and waving off the still loud Cromptons from New St as they returned the tour to Crewe. This had been a classic tour our respect for Cromptons and grids enhanced that bit more.
As listed below the return journey from New St to Leighton involved a kettlex, bus, 321 and a pair of 150’s!
